Hi, anybody understands the end of Only Dying of Mighty Joe Young (the whispers, the bell...) ???

I'm only dying of curiosity!! Can somebody help me?

First post :) ;)

i think it was just to kind of enhance the sad atmosphere of the song... they needed some creepy sound effects so thats what they did. i really hope they release the version they did for the crow movie at some point, its an awesome song and they were at their best in 1993/1994 when they probably recorded it

On the topic of Only Dying...Rob said that the song has been dissected and parts have been used in other STP songs, right?

Does anything come to mind? Which current STP songs have a "piece" of Only Dying in it?

The guitar solo towards the end sounds a little bit like the guitar solo in "Sin"... does anybody else hear that?

I do.

Every time they do an "Ask STP a question", or "Ask Scott a question", or "Ask Soft Drive a question", I ask about the studio version they did for the Crow soundtrack and whether we can ever hear it.

It's always ignored, and if they answer anything, they'll answer questions about what food their dog likes or something... although I guess having some communication with your favorite musician's recording pals is better than nothing.

Softdrive didn't record the song. It was recorded way back in 93. There would be no point asking Softdrive about it. You might as well ask them who shot JFK, or how Jim Morrison really died.

But anyway, we are lucky enough to have recording of it even if it's a transfer from an old demo tape. It would be cool to have more Purple era material, but in the end I'm really more interested in them releasing what they have now.

What? Of course they didn't record the song. But Scott knows, and Scott is a part of Softdrive.

No. Because Scott, the leader of Softdrive, who also posted the "Ask Softdrive a question" on his twitter, and "Ask me a question" on his MySpace, was the singer of the recording of the song I want to hear. So bringing it up to someone who knows the answer of whether we will be able to hear it or not has relevance.

Did he really say that? Funny, the bass on the part where he goes "This pain I think it only gets deep regret And where Im going I dont know now" sounds like the bass line for the Piece of Pie bridge when Scott sings "yeah.... don't wanna let me be a man".

Also, the drum fill after the first chorus in Only Dying sounds like the drum fill on Big Empty after the first chorus. I agree the solo sounds similar to Sin.

Can anybody hear those two parts? Anything else? That's all I could really catch.

I'm happy this topic was brought back up. I just listened to this song for the first time in a while and remembered how great it is. I'm really thinking that the quality of the recording suits the song well. It has a very 90's vibe the way it gets kind of fuzzy when Scott sings louder or hits higher notes. Definitely one of my favorites the band has ever done.

I found it interesting that STP brought back the track "Fast As I Can" for their new album but didn't revist Only Dying which dominates FAIC...... I WANT AN ANSWER TO WHY ONLY DYING WAS NEVER REVISITED!!! It's a freakin dynamite hit, unmastered at that!!!

Well we are not 100% sure that the new track Fast As I Can is the actual one from the MJY demo. Maybe just the same name but different song.
Anywho back on this topic from the first post, I was just listening to this song and I always wondered myself what was the background dialogue and bell sound at the end of this song was. My guess is that the fact that the song was suppose to be on The Crow soundtrack that it was actual dialogue from the movie that they inserted at the end of the song. I think there were 1-2 songs from The Crow soundtrack that had some dialogue from the movie as well at the end of their songs. It also sounds like a vehicle is driving by as well like through some dark alley way. lol. That's what I imagined since most of the movie was pretty dark. That's my two cents on that!

Some guy called STPMattB confirmed on STP's official forum that Fast As I Can is NOT the Mighty Joe Young song.

What andrew said,

+

The song that we have is from 1990/1991, it was never meant to be on any soundtrack and has nothing to do with The Crow. The band did re-record the song in 1993 for said soundtrack, but that re-recording was never leaked or released.

As much as I would love to hear an updated and remade version of that kickass song.......i rather hear 12 totally new tracks on this one.

would be cool as a b-side though, but i'm not holding my breath.

If STP released a b-sides album ( which hopefully they do!) I think the following tracks would be included on the album:

1.) Samba Nova
2.) About a Fool
3.) Heed the Water Whisperer
4.) You Can't Drive Me Away
5.) Only Dying (maybe rerecorded?)

and of course other songs we know nothing about.

I think that song is great, I can't see why they didn't put that track on the "Core" record, maybe with all this "facebook/my space" thing we can get more publicity for the song
