Books...Fall to Pieces & Not Dead & Not for Sale
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:40:30 PM »
Despite being such a long time fan, reviews kind of dissuaded me from buying Scott's book...and Mary's for that matter too.

The typical [damning] review I came across a few times was that there wasn't any more depth (in Scott's book) than you'd get from a batch of magazine articles strung together.
I was wondering, for those of you who have it, what are your thoughts? Are these must-own books?

Must own if you are like me and "need" everything for your collection to be complete.

As far as a good read? You have over 1200 posts here. I guarantee after reading it you'll feel as if you could have WRITTEN it.

I have, but have not READ, Mary's book. I got nothing for ya there.
How could they not notice it?! Because it's a little mint.  It's a Junior Mint!

Scott's book is worth reading, I think a lot of people complained about the fact that it's such a fast read and there's actually not a whole lot of writing in it. There's a lot of blank pages and pictures/lyrics so you can easily read it in one sitting. If you go in with the knowledge that it's a really short book you will enjoy it. Mary's was much better written, I own them both and would say if you're a big fan you won't regret buying a copy of them (especially if you grab used copies).

Do not have Mary's book.  Was initially interested but at the time reviews also held me back.

Have Scott's.  It is a VERY quick read.  There are many instances where a page is only half filled, lots of space filled with lyrics, other space filled with photos.

There are definitely some parts of the book that have good detail, and I personally learned many things I hadn't known (or hadn't known enough about at the time).  But there are also many topics that just get glanced over.

My final feeling of the book was just that I had wished there was so much more.  Reading the ghotswriter's story about how the book was worked on, I now understand why it ended up that way.    Difference is, you have this knowledge going into it so perhaps your expectations are better tailored.

I like Mary's book a lot more than Scott's book because it goes into much more detail on certain things that happen.  Scott seemed to gloss over most things and there were only a couple new things I learned about him after reading his book.

I used to work in a guard booth. Left my library copy of Fall to Pieces in there without realizing once. Came back the next morning and the old man that relieves me for the overnight who had never listened to STP was finishing it up. He had read the whole thing in one sitting and didn't put it down. He said it was incredible.

How much of Mary's book is about Scott?

Since the reviews are bad just find a pdf version of the book online and read it for free. That's what I did and I finished it in about an hour.

A good majority of it. I liked it and the insight it gave. It's worth a try. You can probably get it for cheap on a site called thriftbooks.com.

Just looking quickly on amazon, I see hardcover you can get for $60+ but paperback starts at $180.

I'm wondering if some chains filled their inventory after his death, expecting a bump in sales.

FWIW, it does say you can order and they will deliver when it comes back in stock.  I wonder if the publishers will issue more copies.

If you don't need to own a physical copy, there is a kindle version for $11.

Thanks for the response.

Pretty insane to see the market go up like this for what I can only imagine is a money grab on his death.

Yeah. Definitely. It's amazingly disgusting but I suppose not surprising.
