Purple 20th Anniversary
« on: June 07, 2014, 05:44:59 AM »
Purple came out 20 years ago today!  I tried setting up a track by track look back/interview with Robert for my site earlier this week but STP's PR still hasn't heard back from him, it still could happen but bummer I couldn't have something up for everybody today as Purple's 20th anniversary definitely isn't getting anywhere near the hype of something like Soundgarden's Superunknown 20th anniversary.  I'm actually going to try Scott as well.

STP Shows: 5/1/08, 6/24/08, 12/31/08, 7/1/09, 5/25/10, 6/5/10, 10/29/10, 9/22/12, 5/30/13, 9/1/13
Velvet Revolver Shows: 7/22/06, 9/15/07
Scott Weiland Shows: 12/14/08, 12/8/11

I'd love to have a re-issue of Purple.

Maybe the 30th anniversary...

Also, Holy Fuck I cannot believe it has been this long since I walked out of the record store with this disc.

As far as the hype for Soundgarden vs STP right now, STP is dead and wouldn't gain much from all of this, hell they can't even tour right now. Soundgarden however are still out there playing gigs and need the publicity out of it. If Scott wasn't so fucked up we would of got a lot great core 20th anniversary gems. Maybe when CheSTP gets back up n going they will try to hype it more?

They are going to start touring again at the end of the year... Frankly, I'd find it kind of moronic if they don't do at least a few Purple Anniversary shows. They fired Scott over a botched anniversary tour. To have any form of Purple celebration torpedoed over LP would be frustrating to say the least.

The worst thing is the lack of a re-issue, though. A 3 disc set with the album, the full Brendan O'Brien mix of the '94 Worcester show, and DVD/Blu-Ray with the full Worcester show and any other misc Purple-era footage they have would have been amazing...

Agree. I'm still disappointed about no Core re-issue, as well. Maybe they will, eventually, re-issue the first 3 albums at the same time, like some other bands have been doing.

Oh I get that, but it's something that can bring up positive feelings from STP fans, which is really needed right now in general, even if STP is now split into two acts touring the material (Scott with Wildabouts and DeLeos/Eric with Chester).

Pretty cool article about it:

http://www.stereogum.com/1685171/purple-turns-20/franchises/the-anniversary/

Really interesting article. The writer really seems to know what he's talking about, and I liked how he explains STP's success in the context of what was going on in the rock world during those years.

I'm all for new music from CheSTP, but I feel Purple anniversary shows would be a big let down without Scott. I'd rather this new lineup just looked forward, I couldn't get nostalgic about the album with Chester up there singing it.

A rerelease like the one you outline would definitely be the way to go.

STPw/CB doing a Purple tour would be hilarity.  I'm sure the Deleos are probably trying to figure it out though. They have zero self awareness.

I totally agree. A Purple re-release would be nice, but a Purple anniversary tour with Chester wouldn't feel right. I'm sure the DeLeos know that. Their best course is to keep working on new material and keep mixing it into the setlist.

Take it easy, Champ. Why don't you sit this next one out, stop talking for a while.

I hear you, but at the same time it would be more disappointing for them just to go on another greatest hits tour. I think what they need to do is try to celebrate the music of Purple and it's impact, and IMO they can still do that with Chester.

I just don't think they should go overboard. Instead of a huge year-long tour, just 2 or 3 months of special Purple shows... And instead of playing Purple cover to cover, just play a full setlist with all the songs from Purple sprinkled throughout it.

EDIT: Would anyone (besides those who object ChesTP in general) object to a set like this?

1.   Meatplow
2.   Vasoline
3.   Wicked Garden
4.   Big Bang Baby
5.   Lounge Fly
6.   Out of Time
7.   Still Remains
8.   Army Ants

(Acoustic/Semi-Acoustic miniset)
9.   Sour Girl
10.   Wonderful
11.   Pretty Penny
12.   Tomorrow

13.   Silvergun Superman
14.   Big Empty
15.   Black Heart
16.   Interstate Love Song
17.   Kitchenware & Candybars
18.   Sex Type Thing

(Encore)
19.   Dead And Bloated
20.   Unglued
21.   Trippin’

Hearing the band breakdown the album tracks would be awesome, Happy Anniversary
