For being just some random interview, I enjoyed those questions.
Funny Scott talked about space. As a developing guitarist, I was a long-time employee at a mom and pop music shop, as some older members here may remember. Well, one of the perks of being a decent player and not being a dick is that you make friends. I got lots of free tips and lessons from some of our teachers, many of whom are great players. One tip I got that really changed my playing was about playing versus not playing. In other words, if you listen to a great vocal melody, there is singing and there are places where there isn't singing. Guitar playing should be the same. What you don't play is just as important as what you do. Just like you wouldn't want a singer just singing constantly for 4 minutes, you wouldn't want to play guitar like that. My soloing got much better after this.
Well, I never really enjoyed Doug Grean's playing much. I don't think he is a bad player or anything, it just never spoke to me. I always thought it was because he tended to play a lot of 8th note guitar lines. But what it REALLY was, was that he didn't leave a lot of space in his playing. He just sort of started noodling and kept on going without any breathing room.
Doug and Scott wrote some pretty good songs together. I don't know what these other guys can contribute. But playing-wise, it might be addition by subtraction when it comes to Doug.
