My point is that we can debate shades of how messed up he might be, but when we compare him to himself when he was his most lucid, exciting, and interesting, he fails the litmus test.
I completely agree.  Unfortunately, this has been the case with him in interviews for at least the last 3 years dating back to the HIG release.  I'm not sure when exactly everything changed and he couldn't form a sentence with out pausing or saying "um" at least 18 times, but it's been that way as far as I can tell for 3+ years now.

He's never been a straight ahead talker.

I hope that was a joke.  Look at lovemachine's youtube post, he was pretty straight forward in that one.

Yes, my example was a joke. The way I see it is Weiland's always seemed to struggle getting words out. Listen to the Rockline interview from '94. Same stuff. There was a short period where he seemed clear minded, and I have no explanation for that, but my point is his 'ums' or 'uhs' have been around for a long time.

There's something weird about him alright....his make up! Pffff, I just wanted to get in there and wash his face clean, it is that dreadful! And it's not the eyeliner, which I'm used to, it's the blush in his cheeks, and I think he had rouge as well...the whole coloring of his face just looks weird!

He might not speak as fast as he used to, but this was pretty good, compared to, say, the last Howard Stern interview...so I take it as a major improvement. Hopefully he will stay this way or even improve some more. What can I say, I like to see the glass half full  ;D

"Opening a present isn't like opening a present anymore, it's like paaliauweilygqawvbeb98quy3049 7tg6vb0"

This was amazing and seriously almost made me choke on coffee.  I had to rewind it and watch it again.  Haha.

...I'm with Laura.  Something isn't right, and it make me sad, as well (except for the abovementioned hysterical child impersonation).  Maybe it's because I've been following this band for so long... maybe it's because I'm older... maybe it's because I've become a mom - but I just kind of wanted to hop through the screen to hug him and then try to see how far things could go from there.  The fluidity of his speech wasn't the problem.  I guess it was more just the tone of his voice?

I'm sure he misses his children - the holidays can be very sad when you're lonely.  I wish I saw that same look he used to have in his eyes.  My wish to Santa would be that Scooter finds his spark and keeps it.  Something seems off.  I am not saying I think he's drunk or high or on Rx meds - just that something doesn't look, sound, or feel right.
How could they not notice it?! Because it's a little mint.  It's a Junior Mint!

Yes, that's true.  Even when it was obvious that he was sober, it just seemed to be part of his speech pattern.

But there's a particular lucidity and clarity that he showed in the No. 4 era that just doesn't compare to any other time.  He has been on drugs/alcohol/whatever for a majority of his career now.  Perhaps it caught up with him.  But there is a certain strangeness...a slight slur, weird movements, facial contortions, fluctuating ability to get streamlined thoughts out...that are obvious at least since the STP reunion, but probably all the way back to the Libertad era.

He's incredibly unhealthy in the STP rockumentary face to face interviews (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8Ex8JQ8TwA), but he can still get thoughts out pretty well.

Again, none of this comes close to the No. 4 era when we know he was sober.  So something is going on (still).

I think that you're right about the lonely part...he's lost so many people in his life...for a while now he has been looking kind of sad to me. I didn't particularly see it on this video, but I get where you're coming from. And I also wish him well and hope that he will be happy.  :)

I just finished watching the video. I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Maybe he's wearing more makeup than what we are used to seeing only because he's on CNN, not MTV or a regular concert. I don't know why people on here are being so critical about him in this interview. He's not 25 anymore. Yah the guys a little older and he has a different haircut and it seems like his eyebrows have been trimmed some but seems like the Scott we always know. He was talking about the holidays and what it meant to him. On a positive note, he seems fine. I thought it was cool how we was talking about an ornament his kids made him. Everyone was so busy criticizing Scott that nobody saw that clip of another Christmas video that he made, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" Cool video! Happy Holidays everyone!  8)

I don't think any of us were really critisizing him (well, I didn't like his make up but that's hardly his fault... ;D ), it's more that we're kind of worried about him...and we worry because we love the guy! (At least, I do :P )

Here's an article that takes what Scott said on the CNN interview:

IMO, I think he was trying to express his negative feelings about how commercialism has corrupted the magic of Christmas he experienced as a child, but just couldn't find the words. When he talks about Lincoln Logs vs. the newfangled toys of today and the greed he sees when his children open presents. Just a thought.

That was cool but what the hell is a lincoln log?

Yeah, it looked like they caked the make-up on him though

I don’t mean to be overly critical, but I just get a strange  feeling when I watch this.  It’s not the  um’s and ah’s that bother me (I hear that stuff all day at work); rather, I  just have a sense that he’s not completely…present?  To see what I mean, look at him here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=GyMdTMN_VkA

Plenty of um’s, ah’s, ya know’s, and pauses, but to me,  there is no question—he is 100% there.

I showed the CNN clip to a few people who are unfamiliar with  Scott.  No one had any idea what I was  talking about.  The general consensus was  that it is “a very nice holiday message from a guy who seems a little nervous  and shy.”

Honestly, I’m glad most of you think I’m wrong.  I really hope I am.
