Anyone prefer the MJY Demo over any STP albums/side projects?
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:57:26 PM »
Funny story, ( not really ) about two months ago I tried to get a buddy of mine into STP.... To sum up his tastes he's really into  indie bands and 80's punk so for starters I gave him my Core and No. 4 cd's and gave him a couple suggestions. What I didn't know is that I had a burned copy of the MJY demo in my Core case. Short story made even shorter, he's now really into No. 4 and Tiny but his favorite album is the MJY demo. He says he's been listening to it on a daily basis ever since I let him borrow it and constantly tries to convince me it's their best album

Kinda made me wonder... Does anyone here favor the demo over any STP albums/ side projects?

I've always been really into the demo.... I would say I listen to it more than Purple, Contraband, and Talk Show

And this should be based on personal tastes... Obviously  those albums are superior to the demo

I love the demo versions of "Wicked Garden", "Where the River Goes", and "Piece of Pie" and obviously "Only Dying" (which is a great song, but has been a bit overhyped lately), but I'd take any STP album over the demo any day. The demo sounds like it was based on mostly jam sessions and the songs that were well put together were re-recorded for Core, which is an album I think is better than the demo.

I dont prefer the Mighty Joe Young demo over any STP albums, but I still like it a lot. It's funny though...I don't really like the original versions of Wicked Garden, Naked Sunday, or WTRG. Only Dying, Scary Area, and that version of Piece of Pie are my favorites
My STP shows: 8/10/2008, 7/19/2009, 10/10/2009, 5/22/2010, 4/26/2011, 4/24/2015   Weiland solo: 1/29/2009, 11/29/2012, 3/13/2015    VR: 8/5/2007

I do not prefer it over any album, but love the vibe it has! And like wickedgarden23 said, I prefer the Core versions too, although sometimes is fun to have the chance to hear the alternative.

Nope, but I would like to hear the rest of the tunes re-done or remastered if possible

"Only Dying" (which is a great song, but has been a bit overhyped lately)

It is BY FAR the most overhyped song on this forum's history. Period.

The demo's themselves are pretty cool for the sake of hearing them. Much more of a funky Faith No More/RHCP vibe to them then what resulted.

Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

You don't think it's one of their best songs?
The unreleased re-recorded version would make a great bonus track if STP releases some sort of 20th anniversary cd for Core next year.

As I said before, I do prefer Mighty Joe Young record over some STP and STP-related albums. I like it a lot more than Core, No.4, Army Of Anyone and Talk Show.
I love the funky side of the demo the most - Love Machine, Piece Of Pie, etc.
Also, the MJY version of Where The River Goes just blows the Core version out of the water

I definitely prefer it to the self-titled release, personally. Neither really sound like STP though...

Core & Self Titled are my 2 least favourite STP albums, and they are still both waay better than the MJY demo, which sounds like a bunch of musically confused kids struggling to identify what they are good at.

In fact I thoroughly dislike the funk oriented stuff which sounds like Real Men Don't Kill Coyotes era Chilis (which sucked), and am extremely glad they didn't end up going down that route as STP.

To be honest, I havn't listened to the song in probably a few years since the demos were leaked. To me at the time though, it did not live up to the hype.

My feeling is this. I do not dislike the song, but it is a demo for a reason. Granted, the circumstances are different due to Brandon Lee's death, but I'm sure it would have surfaced by now as a major release if the band was really behind the song. It could as a B-side to a Core re-release if that happens like you said. I guess we will have to wait and see.

A few years? I think your a little over due for a listen.
