And while I don't think having a four year degree makes you any more qualified necessarily, it's a fact of life that many job postings simply require it.  They may not give a shit what you went to school for, but without it your resume is going right in the trash.

I agree with that in a sense. I just know too many people that go to school for one thing, and they are doing something completely different. In my field specifically, it's more about hands-on and work experience. I don't recall too many times when I went on job interviews and they asked me what I did at school. (Unless I listed it on my resume, like for example I was a TV producer my senior year for one of the school's TV programs)

Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

Yeah we get off lightly in England.  3 years of drinking, not going to any lectures, eating potato sandwiches, cramming the night before the exams, and hey presto we have an honours degree  ::)

I did my Dip HE in Hull so I know english degrees are certainly not lax whatsoever

4 year degrees - same as the Scottish BSc/BA (Honours).  Mine is a 3 year BSc so I haven't got honours.  In England as I know there are English people reading this, your BA/BSc (Hons) is a 3 year course.  Education systems of the world eh

Yeah, I went back at 28 and did my 4-yr BSc (Hons) in Maths plus a 1-yr teaching qualification. Obviously, I wouldn't be without them but I do wonder what value a degree is going to have in the future (except for specialist vocations).

In the UK, certainly, there are too many people taking on too much debt for degrees that won't guarantee them squat. It's tough out there and getting tougher all the time.

Yea I got my AS degree in General Business, and it hasn't really done much since I received it, last year.   Mostly, it just comes down to a drug test anyway.   But it is still better than nothing, and it helped me figure out what to pursue if I go to a University later (because I had no idea for awhile.)   I still plan to go to a University in my 30's, but I'm kind of burned out on it, now for awhile. For now, I want to try to find a steady job instead of just spending more money on school.

Am I the only one that actually learned something at the University and finds that that piece of paper actually opens up doors to higher paying jobs?

Nope, I'm right there with ya.

I've never been asked about what I studied.  Hell, half the time I'm not even asked what my major was.  But that Bachelor's really is a barrier to entry most places.  Where I work currently, you have to have one.  You literally can't get an interview without it, our application process just filters you out.  Experience is the deciding factor after you're in the actual interview process.

Most places that I've applied for, it does require that you have a degree. So has my degree been the ticket in to most of my interviews? Yeah, I'd tend to agree. So, I guess I shouldn't complain that much about it. I'm just frustrated because I'm not working in the field that I went to school for. (Freelancing aside)
