"Coma" was supposed to be the first single but the record label wanted something more poppy. I think if that or "Hollywood Bitch" would've been the lead single it might have sold better, but I still love "Days of the Week". It's one of my favorite STP songs.

I love Coma but Hollywood Bitch would have been a better first single in my opinion.

And also a video would have helped a lot! a mean, back then videos were still important!

Big comeback album and they come out with DOTW?  I remember my friends not even knowing it was STP, they thought it was a song by Third Eye Blind.  It was embarrassing.  Good song but not the way to re introduce the band to the rock public.  But I call BS on whoever thinks STP didn't sign off on DOTW.  They would have suck*d c0ck to get main stream success.  They weren't looking to please STP fans at all.  Part of the problem with their current long term viability.  They consistently ignore their fans, whether they think they do or not.  Don't put all the blame on the band.  Their management just really missed at every turn, and Scott's issues didn't help.  Probably should have stayed with Steve Stewart, instead of these factories they went to.  They didn't give a f*ck about the fans.  Just the buck.  If they realized this they'd be cruising like PJ, NIN, DMB right now instead of playing indian casinos in the middle of nowhere.

Their decision making process is flawed.  It has been for a decade.  But hey, they're still together.........

It's too bad that the promotion of Shangri was so  terrible
I agree that Hollywood Bitch should have been the first single.... Even over Coma.
There's no doubt the first single should have been a rocker, but IMO HB would have been a safer bet over Coma for the first single, especially for the charts
And I agree... Why the hell was there not  a music video?
Another missed opportunity for Shangri I think was the fact that Too Cool Queenie was never released as a single... With the songs subject matter  I think the controversy alone would have upped Shangri's sales at least 500,000

I personally thought DOTW was a great first single and I went out and bought the CD right away after hearing it.  They were obviously trying to broaden their sound with this record and DOTW is the best and most catchy song to show that transition.  Too many "meat and potatoes" people are into STP anyway, I've ALWAYS preferred it when they've done something different, and that's why Tiny Music and Shangri are their best albums, imo.

I love Hollywood Bitch but I too think that if Coma was released maybe as a video or single it might have sold more copies. Back in 01' you had bands like Limp Bisquick,Korn, and Linkin Park in its prime. They all kinda had that rap rock thing going on. The intro to Coma I think has that rap rock type of sound and I think if they released as their first single perhaps could have sold more copies but at the same time Coma doesn't really represent the album as a whole. So I can see why the put out DOTW first for more of a poppier direction.

I would've fallen in love with any 1st single off that album.  But I think Coma would've fit better in the sense of them "coming back to the forefront of Rock" it would've made borderline fans give STP another shot IMO.  Because the last public/mainstream taste in their mouthes of No. 4 was really Sour Girl (and that got forced down their throats pretty good).  DOTW gave reinforcement of a softer poppier side, I think it was more a 'fool me once...' kinda thing as far as rock radio was concerned.

For HB, it just didn't catch, whether it was because DOTW threw people off or because after 9/11 many radio stations turned to old proven/safe rock songs instead of introducing much new music for fear of ruffling any feathers....then throw out WONDERFUL (which is one of my all time favorite songs) on rock radio?!?  They'd almost have better shots trying to win over top40/pop stations with Atlantic's approach at the time.

What a disaster.  It's unfortunate that such a beautiful album had to suffer this journey.

But Virgojams is correct too.  COMA doesn't really represent the album as a whole.  I just don't think there was any possible winning combination for that album as long as the artist was STP and the label was Atlantic...
Hold me closer.....closer.....let me go!

There's always something that has puzzled me, with as money motivated as STP is you'd think they would have put out another Core or Purple like albums by now.
It would put alot more asses in the arenas and alot more cash in their pockets.
That's all they care about, yet they haven't done this.
Too bad they would rather be loved by the critics than their fans.

COMA was the groups choice as first single but label pushed for DOTW

Big comeback album and they come out with DOTW?

There comeback album was No.4 and Down KILLED IT as the lead single. Great rocker.

I love DOTW, but not as a lead single. Coma or Hollywood Bitch have my vote.
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..
