Rank the STP shows you've been to
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:14:39 PM »
I got bored.  Rank the STP shows you have been to from best to worst.  Here's my list.

1. October 29, 2010- Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, CA
2. June 24, 2008- Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA
3. December 31, 2008- Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA
4. May 1, 2008- Jimmy Kimmel Live Mini Concert in Los Angeles, CA
5. July 1, 2009- House of Blues Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, CA
6. May 25, 2010- Jimmy Kimmel Live Mini Concert in Los Angeles, CA
7. June 5, 2010- Irvine Meadows/KROQ Weenie Roast in Irvine, CA

The Nokia Theatre gig just absolutely blew me away, there was just a great vibe and it was amazing.  It was the happiest I've ever seen the band together.  The Hollywood Bowl show was magical, Scott was nuts and it just felt like a historic show being at the Hollywood Bowl.  The New Years Eve show was also a lot of fun, despite Scott's voice not being as strong as it was at the two previous shows I mentioned.  I thought both Kimmel mini concerts were a lot of fun too.  I enjoyed the Sunset Strip show in 2009 and Scott sounded really good but he didn't seem as into it as he did at other STP shows I've been to, still a fun show.  The worst STP show I've been to was in June in Irvine at the Weenie Roast.  I enjoyed seeing STP like I always do, but Scott was a mess that night and missed his cue coming in on Tumble In The Rough.  I'd say the top two STP shows I've been to are the two best concerts I've ever seen, with Pearl Jam in 2009 right behind them.

Also when it comes to STP related shows I'd say the Velvet Revolver show I saw in July 2006 in Costa Mesa was solid.  They sucked though at LA Invasion in September 2007.  Scott sucked live when I saw him solo at KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas too.  I'd say that and the LA Invasion show are the worst I've ever seen him.  I'd say the solo performance was worse because at least the VR show had the train wreck factor, hell I was even yelling at Scott to reunite STP at that show.  I think Rob, Dean, and Eric bring out the best in him live.  I never saw Army of Anyone, I considered going to their Anaheim show in 2007 but I had a feeling STP were going to reunite sometime soon so I decided to save my money.

STP Shows: 5/1/08, 6/24/08, 12/31/08, 7/1/09, 5/25/10, 6/5/10, 10/29/10, 9/22/12, 5/30/13, 9/1/13
Velvet Revolver Shows: 7/22/06, 9/15/07
Scott Weiland Shows: 12/14/08, 12/8/11

April 7, 2008 - Houdini's mansion, Hollywood, CA Pretty sure nothing will ever top this concert....
March 22, 2010 - Midland, Kansas City, MO
July 25, 2008 - Greek Theatre, Berkeley, CA
November 1, 2010 - The Warfield, San Francisco, CA
October 20, 2009 - Fox Theater, Oakland, CA
December 31, 2008 - Club Nokia, Los Angeles, CA
September 3, 2008 - Sacramento, CA

The first 4 are the most memorable ones. The other 3 were great, but nothing special. New Years show was cool because it was New Years.

Looking at my tickets, I haven't spent less than $52.50 on one. Except for the time I got in for free, but I had to drive across 6 states to get there. Hopefully the band is at least enjoying it....

1. September 3, 2010 - Borgata, Atlantic City, NJ

As much as I hate to admit it, the Borgata is probably the best place to see a band up close and personal in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area.  The acoustics suck but when it comes down to being 5 feet from the band or the sound being perfect somehow the band wins out.

2. September 5, 2010 - PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ

Nothing like pulling 8th row seats off of Ticketmaster the day of the show and eating the other four tickets you had...it was totally worth it though!

3. October 3, 2000 - First Union Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA

My first STP show.  Don't remember lots of details, but I remember the songs from No. 4 being amazing live.

4. August 8, 2008 - Musikfest, Bethlehem, PA

Weird outdoor fair-type set-up, but an awesome show

5. August 31, 2010 - Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT

Good show, crappy venue.  Drove 5 hours each way and ended up stuck in CT when the ignition column went on my two year old car.  Kinda ruined the experience, the aquarium was cool though.

6. May 31, 2008 - PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ

Honestly, the show wasn't that bad.  But two petite females in a crowd of angry men wondering whether we should leave before a riot ensued, not fun.
08-03-00 Spectrum
05-31-08 PNC  08-08-08 Musikfest
8-31-10  Mohegan Sun 09-03-10  The Borgata 09-05-10  PNC
08-14-11 Musikfest

Memorable and best are different lists for me so I'll go best performances:

1. August 19, 2010 - Grand Rapids, MI - Deltaplex Arena

My 3rd STP show but it was hands down the best performance I've seen from them. I missed out on two shows during the spring mini-tour so I was stoked I finally got to hear the new tunes live. Between hearing new material, old classics and great jamming, it was a real intimate venue which was awesome. $12 for main floor general admission.

2. July 7, 2009 - Lansing, MI - Adado Riverfront Park

My 2nd STP show and for $30 general admission it was worth it. I was able to get right in front and see one of my favorite bands live. It was a wonderful experience just being in sheer awe the entire time. As an added bonus, I got to hear "Seven Caged Tigers" and "Unglued" live which was something I'd been hoping for ever since the reunion.

3. June 4, 2008 - Detroit, MI - The Fillmore Detroit

My 1st STP show. Two days before I saw Van Halen in Grand Rapids so I was quite excited about seeing two of my favorites within three days. I wasn't 100% familiar with all of the material, which is a shame because we'll probably never hear "Lady Picture Show" again. I remember how different Scott acted with STP than he did five months prior with VR in the same venue. To top it off, the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup this night and when Scott announced "3-1 Detroit in the 3rd" the place went apeshit. When the concert was over, Woodward Ave. was gridlocked and the celebration had begun. What a great night. $45 for balcony.

4. August 26, 2010 - Detroit, MI - Fox Theatre

This was a pretty good show but they cut out nearly all of the jamming for some reason. There's always such great energy and buzz when the band is in Detroit, it makes it very special. It was very similar to Grand Rapids in terms of performance quality but I'd give the edge to GR because of the jamming. $45 for mezzanine.
6/4/08 - Detroit, MI - The Fillmore (Red Wings win the Cup); 7/7/09 - Lansing, MI - Common Ground Festival; 8/19/10 - Grand Rapids, MI - Deltaplex; 8/26/10 - Detroit, MI - Fox Theatre; 4/20/11 - Detroit, MI - The Fillmore; 8/18/12 - Pontiac, MI - Silverdome

1. October 1st, 2002 - Chicago, IL @ The Riv
2. August 1st, 2000 - Tinley Park @ The World (opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers)
3. October 12th, 2001 - Rosemont, IL @ Rosemont Horizon (Family Values)
4. May 23rd, 2008 - Chicago, IL @ Charter One Pavillion

Dates are approximate. The Riv concert ranks as one of my favorite shows of all-time. Highlights included Still Remains, Dancing Days, K & C, and a KILLER version of Lounge Fly. The first time I saw them was at the World, and they totally blew the Chili Peppers off the stage. Piece of Pie was played at that one. The Rosemont set was highlighted by a guest appearance of Richard Patrick as him and the boys covered 'Hey Man, Nice Shot.' First time I heard 'Coma' as well, and I was pissed that no one knew what it was. The May show was below average compared to the other three. Highlights included Too Cool Queenie and Lady Picture Show.

Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

1. July 19, 2009: Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland

This was the second time I saw STP and it was a perfect concert. Merriweather is by far my favorite outdoor venue and has a great atmosphere. I was on the lawn, but being far away from the stage really let me just kick back and soak everything in. The band was absolutely flawless, played a longer set than the first time I saw them...and opening with Silvergun Superman couldn't have been more perfect. Also seeing songs like Sin for the first time live was something I had fantasized about for years.

2. May 22, 2010: RFK Stadium Grounds (DC101 Chili Cookoff), Washington, DC

Seeing STP right after Alice In Chains made for one of the best concert experiences I'll probably ever have. The crowd for this show was wild and really into STP, and I was practically in the front row. The setlist was excellent, and it was great seeing Between The Lines, Hickory Dichotomy, and Huckleberry Crumble live only three days before the self-titled album came out.

3. August 10, 2008: Pimlico Race Course (Virgin Festival), Baltimore, Maryland

It's hard to rank my first time seeing STP at #3 because it was one of the best days of my life: FINALLY being able to see STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. While the show was great and I was right up front in a MASSIVE crowd that was loving STP, they were 20 minutes late and played for an hour at most. The experience of seeing STP for the first time will always be special, but seeing them at Merriweather in '09 and at Chili Cookoff this past May were both just better performances.

4. October 10, 2009: Reading Eagle Theater at the Sovereign Center, Reading, Pennsylvania

The setlist for this show was the exact same as when I saw them earlier that year at Merriweather, except that they opened with Meatplow instead of Silvergun, which was cool since I hadn't seen Meatplow live before. STP put on a fine performance, but the crowd made the whole experience a little disappointing. It was as if no one cared about the band while they were playing, but after every song the place erupted. It was very odd...me and my buddy who were there were among a very small group that was standing the entire time.
My STP shows: 8/10/2008, 7/19/2009, 10/10/2009, 5/22/2010, 4/26/2011, 4/24/2015   Weiland solo: 1/29/2009, 11/29/2012, 3/13/2015    VR: 8/5/2007

1. (A+) October 12, 2002 Providence RI - A friend got free tickets to this show. I wasn't really a big STP fan. Then I saw this show, and I was a changed man. They sounded phenomenal and Scott was all over the place like a madman.  One of the 2 or 3 best concerts I've seen in 30 years.

2. (A) July 17, 2009 Uncasville CT - Excellent show. The only difference between this one and the above is Scott had "good" energy as opposed to being over-the-top active. His voice was in peak form. Interestingly, every song of this concert is/was on youtube and in good quality. First time that's ever happened to a show I went to.

3. (B) May 26, 2008 Uncasville CT - Good but a bit disappointed. Scott was drunk I think, talking slowly and in gibberish. His singing voice was a little weak but the others sounded excellent. Since this was one of their first shows on the comeback, they took a lot of time between songs, a little unorganized.Still better than the average rock show.

In reference to my earlier post...

I saw STP for a fifth time this past April at Pier Six Concert Pavilion in downtown Baltimore...I'd rank it at #4 above the Reading, PA show I went to in October 2009. STP sounded great and the crowd was really into them for the most part. Don't really have any complaints about the show...it was a great time but just not as epic as my top 3 favorite times seeing STP
My STP shows: 8/10/2008, 7/19/2009, 10/10/2009, 5/22/2010, 4/26/2011, 4/24/2015   Weiland solo: 1/29/2009, 11/29/2012, 3/13/2015    VR: 8/5/2007
