The (not what you thought) Greatest Hits CD
« on: June 15, 2010, 08:04:11 PM »
As evident buy the “Thank You” release and the Best Buy “Buy This” release we all know what you can expect from an STP greatest hits CD. Plush, Sex Type Thing, Interstate Love Song, Vasoline, Trippin’ on a hole, Down ect. But I was curious if given the chance to pick 2 songs from each of the 6 studio albums to put together a (not what you thought) greatest hits what would they be? Keep in mind I am curios as to what would be on there excluding the obvious choices. Also keep in mind that any compilation would be greatest hits since everything they have done is gold in my book!

I would go with the following:

Core:  Sin & Dead & Bloated

Purple:  Silvergun Superman & Lounge Fly

Tiny Music: Pop’s Love Suicide & Seven Caged Tigers

No 4: Sex & Violence & Atlanta

Shangri-La Dee Da: Transmissions from a lonely room & Too Cool Queenie

STP: Fast as I can & Maver

Then throw in a “You Can’t Drive Me Away” or a mastered version of “Only Dying”. A couple of live performance would be cool too but only of songs they rarely play live.

Core: Piece Of Pie and Crackerman

Purple: Still Remains and Army Ants

Tiny Music: Trippin' and Art School Girl

No. 4: Pruno and Glide

SLDD: Regeneration and Long Way Home

STP: Huckleberry Crumble and Hazy Daze

Throw in Dancing Days or Revolution, and Regeneration (live), Piece Of Pie (Live 2010), and Shine On You Crazy Diamond (live). Now that would be a STP comp.

Not really. I was just curious in a round about way what tracks on the albums did people really like that weren't "The Hits" so to speak. I love them all but if they were playing live and I was able to pick the set list songs like Plush and Creep would not be on it.

I have thought about this before, but in a slightly different way.

I like to show off STP's versatility, and while a GH CD sort of does that, I often think about what non-hit songs I would put on a CD.  It would be assumed that they already know the radio songs (Dead & Bloated, Sex Type Thing, Wicked Garden, Creep, Plush, Vasoline, Interstate Love Song, Big Empty, Unglued, Dancing Days, Big Bang Baby, Lady Picture Show, Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart, Down, Sour Girl, Days of the Week, Between the Lines), or that the disc I describe below would be a supplement to the songs I just listed.

I'm thinking it would HAVE to be a double disc:

Where the River Goes
Still Remains
Kitchenware & Candybars
Tumble in the Rough
And So I Know
Art School Girl
Adhesive
Seven Caged Tigers
Sex & Violence
I Got You
Atlanta
Wonderful
Hello It's Late
Too Cool Queenie
Long Way Home
Huckleberry Crumble
Hickory Dichotomy
Cinnamon
First Kiss on Mars
Maver

Bonus Tracks:
Love Machine
Dirty Dog
Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down
Man I Didn't Know
It Doesn't Seem to Matter
Goodbye

Here's my picks in chronological order:

Piece of Pie
Plush
Interstate Love Song
Silvergun Superman
Tumble in the Rough
Trippin'
Down
Glide
Dumb Love
Too Cool Queenie
Fast As I Can
Peacoat

Non-album tracks that would HAVE to be included:

Dancing Days
All in the Suit....
Andy Warhol [MTV Unplugged]

I realize some of these are singles, but the OP didn't explicitly rule out singles, and these singles are IMO some of their strongest material. This makes for a nice 15-track set that covers all the bases, and I think it's actually a realistic track list for a potential greatest hits package. Only change I would make would be to mix up the tracks for a smoother listening experience.
