It might just be me, but I honestly think calling any song a filler is a complete slap in the face to a band. You have no idea what the song might actually mean, or what inspired it. Just because you're not digging a certain track doesn't mean it should be labeled as a "filler".
That's true, but I can definitely see where people are coming from when they are saying some of the songs on the album are "fillers". When we don't see STP performing more than 1 or 2 of the songs on the album any more, and many that weren't even played once, we might wonder if the cd was perhaps a cash grab. I'm not too sure that it was, but I could definitely see that it might have been. I enjoyed the album and don't really hate any of the tracks, but my neutral views on some of the songs might have changed if they would've performed them live.
And during the recording sessions, STP said that they were tired of playing the same songs every night so that is why they had an incentive to work on some new material. Wtf happened? They ended up playing only a 4 song max from the new album and never even played their second single live. That was the official crash-and-burn point of the album. What happened to Huckleberry Crumble or Hickory Dichotomy being a single? That never happened either.
So, yes, it can be argued whether STP put all of their music ingenuity and effort into the album. But it is almost undeniable that they really did not put much sweat and effort to support the album once it was released. Now whether it was because of Scott or lack of album sales, is another debate.
