Duff mentions Robert on his column
« on: May 21, 2010, 07:42:57 PM »
Duff runs a column every Thursday for Seattle Weekly. This week writes about replacing Eric Avery with JA and bass players and he mentions Robert as one of the best.

Quote
Really good bass players are a very rare thing in rock music. James Jamerson and Donald "Duck" Dunn from the Motown and Stax Records days set a high-water mark that has only been just touched upon since then.

John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin borrowed heavily from those two, but then added a lot of his own mojo and passed it forward for anyone else to try and improve on. Eric Avery and Robert DeLeo (from Stone Temple Pilots) have probably been the closest as far as carrying on JPJ's lineage, and this is meant as a huge compliment.

The whole stuff

Props to Duff, who is a good bassist himself.

Nice to see him give Rob his due. But I find it odd that he neglects to mention Rob when talking about covering other bassist's work. Almost every concert VR played they played at least one STP song, so you'd think he'd bring that up instead of Cheap Trick.

Robert is such a fluid bassist. I love how he drives the song instead simply laying back in the pocket.

I thought the same and at the same time "if you don't mention Robert in this article you will dissapoint me". But after the entire reading I guess he omitted VR covering STP because there was Scott with him, so wasn't exaclty what he was talking about.

They were simply our interpretations of these songs . . . good or bad."

Robert's use of leading tones is second to none ...
