I both love it...and dislike it...
I think it is a great pop song. A very happy, bouncy summer song. If Sheryl Crow or Rob Thomas or Justin Timberlake or Shania Twain came out with this, I'd say it was perfect for them. A nice, lightweight, positive song that is perfect for Hot AC stations. I'm also happy to see that THE BAND is happy -- to see them write a song like this, after all of the crap they have been through, is fantastic to see.
BUT... let me tell why I pray that they DO NOT release this as a single. They are a ROCK BAND, a band of STT, Down, Coma. A band whose "pop" hits have pretty much all still had a cool, dark feel to them (Plush, Sour Girl, even Days Of The Week had an eccentric vibe to it). This song is TOO sugary, too Miley Cyrus-y, too Taylor Swift-y for such a band. It has the potential to turn an awful lot of their harder fans away from them, to see the band being discussed as sellouts of a sort.
A similar example that those over 40 can recall: Styx was a very popular ROCK band in the late 70s, with songs like Come Sail Away, Renegade, etc. Even their "ballads" were loud, like Lady. But then in the early 80s, their keyboardist Dennis DeYoung took them into a campier, poppier direction. They came out with Mr. Roboto and Babe, two huge hits that soared to the top of the charts. But that choice killed them. They were never taken seriously as a ROCK band again. The band ended up dumping DeYoung in the 90s and now tries to focus their act on their harder side as best they can (albeit as a classic hits touring band - their CDs don't sell well anymore).
STP is a bigger band than Styx was, but the point holds. You can kill your reputation when making the wrong singles choices. I like Cinnamon, but it could be the hit that kills this band's rock and roll aura.
