Personally, I would've rated these higher: Where the River Goes, Silvergun Superman, and Regeneration, and especially Naked Sunday. Sure it's repetitive, but it's so intense! First time I listened to Core, that one was my favorite, because it sounded like nothing else I'd heard before.

Otherwise, I'd say you're right on.

I think I got you deserves a better grade. That song is amazing. Also Tiny music as a whole deserves a better grade The guitar in art school girlfriend is some of deans best work. Not to mention the guitar and bass on Pops love suicide dean and rob just take that song over.

I find it a little hard to believe that Interstate is the only song STP has written that deserves an A+

Atlanta is perfect in my opinion. 100% I'd give And So I Know an A+ over Interstate anyday as well.

I'd give No. 4 close to an A+ as far as albums go for STP. It's my favorite. Would give Tiny Music and Sangri-La As as well. But atleast you're right about Core... always the most popular and always will be their worst album (still their worst is pretty fucking awesome still!)

Don't forget the b-sides also!

Samba Nova 96 A
About a Fool 94 A
Learning to Drive 83 B-
You Can't Drive Me Away 85 B
Heed The Water Whisperer 79 C+

Sin was not one of favorites either, so I probably would have given it a C.

But after seeing it played live.......97 A

Also, Where the River Goes is way too epic for that low score.

I would give Sin much higher than a 76... should be at least an 88.    I would also make Creep and Sex Type Thing a bit lower.  Sure they are hits, but I think there are better songs.  Silvergun Superman is a 95 to me.

Also, Scott Weiland, I'm sorry but you are suspended 5 days for alcohol use.  lol   :D

This is a fun little thread!

I think you have to rate STPs music relative to itself rather than other bands.

Its easy to give STP a A on everything.  Of course!  You're a superfan.

Rating STPs albums against each other I'd come up with the following:

Core: B-
Purple: A-
Tiny Music: A
No.4: D+
Shangri-La Dee Da: C+

Keep in mind I'm rating relative to other STP work, not to music in general.  Core was a solid album, established the band well.  Some of the tones and guitars bleed together too much for my taste, which is why I didnt rate it higher.  It has a good cohesive feel, but the songs could use a bit more separation of sound from eachother.  Given this was a first effort and budget was probably understandably low.  Given that, I should probably have been more generous.

Purple really established the band in my mind.  Wasn't my favorite album, but it has some mind-blowing songs and a great overall vibe.

I think Tiny Music deserves highest marks for its unique artistic direction, and genre-bending journey.  Tiny... could have been an A+ in my book if the mix was a little bit better at parts.

No.4, in my opinion sounds a bit rushed at parts.  While it definitely has some great songs (Atlanta in particular still gives me chills), it lacks a cohesive feel on the whole.  It comes off more like that band was trying to make a statement (which I think they were at the time) and less like a real musical labor of love.

Shangri-La was a pretty great record, but I feel it lacks soul.  DOTW was a clear grab at the popular music of the time, and if I recall was originally written for Sheryl Crow.  The heavier rockers on the record, Dumb Love and Long Way Home especially, sound more like a "here is a hard rock song" and accordingly, dont fit in well on the record.  Also, IMO, those songs come off as wanting to sound like something from Core.  This album feels to me like STP was trying to pay some fan service by evoking some memories from STP's earlier work.  While it really gets unique and artsy later, I think if the record kept more in the vibe of tracks 5-10 it would have been a much more interesting and solid record.  Great songs on SLDD, but not quite to the same level as some other work.  Still I positively LOVE some of the tracks on this record.

I think when STP just lets the music take them somewhere they put out their best work.  When they go for a particular sound, thats when they sometimes misttep.  Again, just my opinion.

Still any of these records are in my player at any given time.  They all are amazing pieces of work.  The collective catalog really makes this band so special.

I dunno why but for some reason I was never that into Where the River Goes. I agree Hichory Dichotomy sounds killer. I wish I could here the album version or a better quality video. Bagman for me is right behind it. For the new songs I would say:

BTL: 95
Hichory Dichotomy: 95
Bagman: 93
Huckleberry Crumble: 88
