I guess it's similar to BBB in that the bridge is a Nirvana homage (seriously, listen to Stay Away) just like BBB's chorus is a Rolling Stones homage (Jumpin' Jack Flash)
Not trying to be a dick but you can call it "homage" all you want, but really there's no overlooking the fact they ripped the song off for Big Bang Baby.

I think it depends on how you interpret BBB. STP suffered some critical backlash early on because they were the band that wanted to be rock stars in the only era in music history when you were supposed to pretend you didn't want to be a rock star. Whether or not it was intended to be interpreted this way, I've always understood it as a song about that idea with parts about wanting to be a rock star (spin me up, spin me out, station to station send me up and out, is this what life and love is all about, I think I think so) weighed against the expected behavior of the time (sell your soul and sign an autograph, we used to see in color now it's only black and white...'cause the world is colorblind) while questioning whether the latter is the correct way to look at rock stars (does anybody know how the story really goes...or do we all just hum along). Using my interpretation, then the chorus is an homage because if you want to be a rock star, you would want to be like those who came before you (the Stones). Of course, the lyrics could just be jibberish.
Regarding Between the Lines, I think the Nirvana-ish part is probably coincidence that will fade the more you listen to it. I remember first hearing Dumb Love and thinking it sounded like Godsmack's Bad Religion. Now, it's not something that crosses my mind.
