Re: Vocal style change from 94-96, and how it is reflected on the albums

His voice is different.

I always wonder whether he sings differently on purpose or not. For instance, "Lady, You Roof Brings Me Down" has a thicker deep sound to it, while other songs on that great record sound more like his voice we're used to hearing now.

No matter what he does in the future, I just hope he doesn't use so many vocal effects. His voice is great no matter what, and when he uses so many effects and harmonies all the time, it sounds like he's hiding something.  In my opinion, Slither would've been better if the chorus wasn't so layered.

I also wonder if "their hits", like Plush or Interstate Love Song would've been as popular if they were recorded later in their career. Or how would Sour Girl or Down sound with his old voice?

Just some thoughts

Here's something...I read somewhere that "Hello It's Late" was written during the Purple sessions (albeit with a lyrical re-write). How would THAT have sounded?

he sounds grungier on that album, thats prolly a big reason they were saddled with ripping off the seattle scene

Good point.

Well, it's not too good, but it's not that bad either. I heard some audio from some of their recent live shows, and he's lost some power in his voice. Case and point Vasoline live from Jimmy Kimmel.

I'm going to a show in the middle of the tour so maybe it'll be better.. But i can't wait to hear it as well!!!

He sang a lot diffrently in VR so I think he's just a little rusty.. I'm sure with practice and time it will come back.. He hadn't played with STP in years..

If you compare Scott's vocals on Vasoline from Jimmy Kimmel Live and compare it to Vasoline when performed on the David Letterman show from 1994, there's a huge difference. Of course, that could just be from the years passing by. Also, I think Scott's voice was probably somewhat strained from his recent tour with Velvet Revolver. I think once he gets back into singing STP songs routinely he'll be fine. He's still one of the best frontmen in the business today.

On Jimmy Kimmel I thought he was a bit weak. I chalked it up to touring for so long and the fact that he was going through a lot of his DUI legal stuff at the time so he was probably stressed mentally from that.

I think he'll do great though. I just think he's slowly turning into more of a studio musician as opposed to live musician. Nothing wrong with that. I'd rather he put out new music recordings often as opposed performed the same songs night after night.

I'm a fan of Scott's voice circa Purple. But then his vocals for Tiny Music really fit the mood of that album too.
