...The group,   however awful, does deserve a little credit for ruining everything their fans loved about them with the 1996 release Tiny Music…Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop..."

I like how he writes on behalf of "their fans".

In some guys "rant" about Apple

"The indomitable force of CD quality audio, forgotten. The music industry negatively altered forever. When I was a teenager, I used to look forward to the latest album from Nirvana or Stone Temple Pilots. I didn’t care that every song on the album was not a gem. That’s what made the great songs even greater"

"Stone Temple Pilots (Palladium):   I hate to add to the endless local glorifying of The Alternative Era,   which seems due mostly to the average age and other demographic details   of your average music writer, but supposedly it’s “cool” to like Stone   Temple Pilots again. Especially amongst the highly critical art and   noise scene that’s supposed to hate them. Maybe it’s time we again started treating nostalgia as a mental illness.
I could never handle this group of copy clowns as they existed, but   I’d be lying if I said I changed the station whenever “Interstate Love   Song” is on. It’s so unbearably of its time that even far better songs   can’t quite capture that period nearly as successfully. The group,   however awful, does deserve a little credit for ruining everything their   fans loved about them with the 1996 release Tiny Music…Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop.   Unfortunately neither of these feats warrants a sixty-five dollar   ticket price, though we all know someone with dark musical skeletons in   the closet who would be more than willing to pay it."

whaa? this cant be right?

From a "footloose" soundtrack.

The contribution of the latter of those, Where the River Goes, I am for now assuming is a cover of the Stone Temple Pilots track of the same name, and – having just invoked the spectre of early ’90s US rock

Also "Window Paine" by Smashing Pumpkins is very bizarre.

"But what there weren't were strong and versatile talents. A steady stream of stars burned brightly for a single or an album - who recalls Marilyn Manson or the Stone Temple Pilots or Nine Inch Nails? Bands formed instantly and were lumped onto festival bills like Lollapalooza or the Big Day Out."

My eight-year-old niece told her teacher that her aunt loves STP, and he said "Really?  So do I!"  So she brought my pictures in to school and they had a class discussion about STP.  Haha...third grade--the next generation of STP fans in training.

1996?

They toured with Cheap Trick in 1997, but this story doesn't seem legit.
