LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - VH1 is reviving its former signature series "Behind the Music."

The cable network is ordering about 10 new episodes of "Music," bringing back the iconic documentary program that ran for seven years on VH1 starting in 1997.

Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland have signed on to participate, and the network is near agreements with several other performers.

"It felt like the time is right," said Jeff Olde, VH1 executive vice president original programing. "There's all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there's other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around."

VH1 had a reminder of the show's popularity last fall when it aired a well-received 90-minute live New Kids on the Block "Behind the Music" special. The event showed the group's first public performance in more than a decade along with a "BTM" retrospective.

"We always hear about the show, even now," Olde said. "It's amazing how much affection viewers have for it."

In focus groups, VH1 found that "BTM" is so deeply associated with the channel, some viewers assumed the series never left the air. The show's storytelling model of the meteoric rise, tragic fall and sober rebirth of an artist was so distinctive that "The Simpsons" devoted a 2000 episode to parodying the show. There was also a short-lived spin-off, "Behind the Music 2," that looked at the careers of younger favorites.

VH1 will update the show's format for 2009, but not too much. Jim Forbes is back as the show's narrator, though the new episodes will add more current footage to anchor the story in the present day, just as the New Kids special intercut with a live event.

"I'm leery about changing certain elements," Olde said. "I think the audience will be mad if we mess with it too much."

Music channel VH1 is breathing new life into its former signature series BEHIND THE MUSIC - by delving into the backgrounds of LIL WAYNE and SCOTT WEILAND.
Network bosses have decided it's time for the popular series to return to the small screen, after a one-off New Kids on the Block special attracted huge viewing figures last year (08).
Rapper Lil Wayne and troubled former Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland have signed up to allow the channel to tell their stories for the forthcoming comeback run.
The show's format looks into the early lives of popular music stars, the rise to fame, as well as their professional and personal struggles. Friends and family are interviewed in the show to give greater insight.

The show ran regular shows from 1997 to 2002, then cut broadcasting back until it was completely scrapped in 2006.

that would be very interesting!  I just don't want it to be all about his drug addictions.  I also hope they don't scrape the bio in favor of this.

Damn.  I'm NOT excited about this one.  The "Behind the Music" series kind of turned itself into a joke - every episode was the same sex, booze, drugs, and rock n roll - I have a feeling our Scotty would wind up being shit on - bad - if this ends up happening.   :(

Didn’t someone in the STP camp once say that they were approached to do Behind The Music but declined because they felt that BTM was for has-beens? Or am I making that up?

this is good!!! It's always good have some Scott on TV (only God knows when it will be aired here)

Though it could be bad, but if Doug and Scott are on it, maybe they could control the information..."Behind the Music" has many mistakes, every VH1 special about VR/STP/Scott are wrong or the translation sucks, seriously, seems they can't get that it's WHYland! it's anoying...

Wait.  I think I might remember that, too.  The "has beens" comment sounds familiar to me.

It's about time Weiland got his own BTM episode.  No one in music has a more interesting and unique story than him.

I was watching a Biography of Robert Downey Jr. and I couldn't help but think of Scott while watching it.

Agreed this will be interesting, but hopefully it's not the same ol' mish mosh that every reported piece of news manages to sneak into its article.
They'll certainly need more than an hour for this one.

don't quote, but I think the has been comment may have been about the rockstar show- the one where they found new singers for INXS.  I remember reading the rob said they were approached for that.
I want to say they didn't want to do an STP behind the music bc they don't want to be known as a band destroyed by herion.  if they did an stp one in 2002 until last february, that could have been the focus.  now with a successful summer reunion tour and the fact scott has his new solo album out, there is more positive material.  we cans till count on hearing a lot about drugs.  we can't lie that has been a big influence on his and the stp story.  that hasn't stopped any of us from following them and loving the music.
I will be hopeful and look forward to an interesting story.

I agree it will have positive present day ending with Scott coming full circle and reuniting with STP and working on a new album with them.

I've always enjoyed the Behind the Music docs. That's how I got into some of the bands. I probably still have the Metallica and Aerosmith ones on tape somewhere.
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..
