OK, I'm doing this from memory, picked it all up by ear so there might be a mistake or two, but here are lyrics and chords for the song.

VERSE 1

A
Stepped out in the pouring rain,
D
Left out on the evening train,
A
I was just a little boy, thinking bout the memory,
E
Father that you used to be.

A
San Jose, It's a sun-drenched town,
D
Your old truck with the windows rolled down,
A
Jerry Jeff ridin' high on the radio,
E
I want to know why you had to go?

BRIDGE
D
Took a plane to California, yeah,
A
Endless summer, 1970's,
A
Telling you that you're the man,
E
That taught me how to sing.

Bm             D
Why did you go?
A
And leave me so young?
A                 E
So young, so young?

CHORUS
B
Tell me things that I want to know,
E
Now I'm a man with a family of my own,
A
Why'd you go and leave me in the cold,
E                                           A
With the face in the mirror of the man I didn't know.
B
In the desert where the warm wind blows,
E
Where'd you go when I was so alone,
A
These California nights can be so cold,
E                         A
I want to know the man I didn't know.

VERSE 2
A
Now I'm the one with the radio song,
D
A wife and kids to tell me what's wrong,
A
I need the man in my life who made me who I am,
E
I don't want to lose you again.

REPEAT: Bridge, Chorus,--Solo--,Chorus

It's a great song!! I remember seeing him perform that on CD... I have it on tape too somewhere. Deep words from him too. His father really affected him (or lack of him).

I thought Man I Didn't Know came about after the Grammy's a couple years ago...written after speaking to Tim McGraw about working together...

Is the Man I Didn't Know going to make an appearance? That's a good tune. It's pretty much Scott Weiland goes country.

I really hope it is. Its one of my favorite songs.
And I hope its Toby Keith-less.

Did I miss something along the way - or were you just being sarcastic about Toby Keith?
Oops, may bad. It was actually Tim McGraw that TMIDK was originally supposed to be a duet with.
In my defense, it has been over 3 years since I first heard about it.

VELVET REVOLVER fan site Velvet-Revolver.com is currently hosting a video and audio file of VR frontman Scott Weiland performing a new song for NBC-TV's "Last Call With Carson Daly". The song, "The Man I Didn't Know", which was performed last week in front of an in-studio audience at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, is described as a "loose-limbed and poignant country rock ballad" about Scott's father, and features a band that includes the unlikely match-up of a pedal steel guitarist and steel drummer. Weiland goes on to explain, "I met Tim McGraw at the Grammys, when we sang 'Across the Universe' together for tsunami relief and we talked about singing a song together. This is the song I wrote for us to sing."

I was going to say - TOBY KEITH!?!?!?  OMG!!!  (I love him!)

Tim McGraw... bah.  I hope it's not included, too.  :)
How could they not notice it?! Because it's a little mint.  It's a Junior Mint!

If "The Man I Didn't Know" isn't on the album, we will see it somewhere down the line. Softdrive exclusive download maybe? I have a feeling it will be on the album though. I thought it got a pretty good response after being performed. I just don't see him stashing the track away, not to see the light of day, much to the fans dismay, especially if we will pay. :)

I'll be really upset if "The Man I Didn't Know" isn't on the album, as that is one of my sole driving interests behind buying the record when it comes out.

My wife loves that song, but pretty much can't stand anything else of his.

Why will not be on the record the man i didnt know?

1.nobody heard the song of studio
2.we saw that he was leaving in the promotional video of the album in your computer
Look I just want to go out sometime you know.  Like normal people, spend time together and enjoy each other's company. Like best friends.  Like lovers that care.  Who actually respect the relationship you know?"

I really doubt "The Man I Didn't Know" and "Learning to Drive" will be on Happy in Galoshes, but we'll see...

The Man I Didn't Know is a great song, kinda country but great. I do like more the live version vs. the studio clips that have been heard. The lyrics are sad but great 'looking at the mirror at the man I didn't know..., 'now I have a family of my own.. ', 'those California nights can be so cold', something like that. I can be related to anybody that didn't know there biological dad for whatever reasons and people say that they 'you look just like your dad'.

I love the tune

They ruined The Man I Didn't Know, vocals are mixed too low.  I like Hyper Fuzz, different from anything he's ever done.

Edit: Actually I kind of like the studio version of The Man I Didn't Know now :)
