Here are the lyrics:

The Man I didn't know

Step out on the pouring rain
Left out on the evening train
I was just a little boy
thinking about the memories
father that you used to be

San Jose is a sun-drenched town
Your old truck with the windows rolled down
Jerry Jeff riding high on the radio
I wanna know why you had to go

Took a plane to California yeah
End of summer 1970's
Telling you that you're the man
that taught me how to sing
Why did you go
Leave me so young..so young..so young

Tell me things that I wanna know
Now I'm a man with a family of my own
Why'd you go and leave me in the cold
with the face in the mirror of the man I didn't know

in the desert where the warm wind blows
where'd you go when I was so alone
Those California nights would be so cold
I wanna know the man I didn't know

Now I'm the one with the radio song
The wife and kids that tell me what's wrong
I need the man in my life
who made me who I am
I don't want to lose you again

Took a plane to California yeah
End of summer 1970's
Telling you that you're the man
that taught me how to sing
Why did you go
Leave me so young.. so long.. so young

Tell me things that I wanna know
Now I'm a man with a family of my own
Why'd you go and leave me in the cold
with the face in the mirror of the man I didn't know

in the desert where the warm wind blows
where d'you go when I was so alone
Those California nights can be so cold
I wanna know the man I didn't know

Go...

(guitar solo)

Tell me things that I wanna know
Now I'm a man with a family of my own
Why'd you go and leave me in the cold
with the face in the mirror of the man I didn't know

In the desert where the warm wind blows
where'd you go when I was so alone
Those California nights can be so cold
I wanna know the man I didn't know

I wanna know

The man I didn't know

Im just curious as to why Weiland never conveyed these feeling toward his father before, at least not in this direct of a way

What I just did was Download the 66 MB version of the Video which was better quality in sound in Rik's V.R. Site. Than I used Adobe Audio an tried to mastered the sound by doing the same process as you John.
:)
What does this mean?

I think that this is a great song and an unexpected and positive change.  I heard the song before this thread was started and I didn't know that Tim McGraw was involved.  It doesn't matter to me since 1) the song's really good and 2) Tim wasn't in the performance.

Daniel Lanois' steel guitar and the steel drums are a great combo.  I can't say I've heard anything like it before.  I'd like to know who the other players are.  Their matching suits and cowboy hats were great too.  Musicall, it reminds me of the version of 'Sour Girl' played on Letterman with Junior Brown on lap steel.  Definately my favorite version of SG.

Overall, I'm pleasently surprised that Scott and Tim and whoever was able push the music in this alterna-country song.  It's not stupid and emo and it's not predictable, boring modern rock.  It's refreshing.  I wonder if a new album from Scott would sound like this?  This song sounds like a mix of STP and Scott's solo sensibilities.  Scott's bellowed vocal delivery sounded a little forced but other than that it was a great performance.

Yeah, they didn't do too bad.  The person singing "harmonies" though did a terrible job.  Bad bad bad.  Few things irk me more.

Yeah, I totally noticed.  It reminded me of Robert a little

The guitar solo was nice touch on top of the pedal steel and steel drums.  A nice balance all around.

Since nobody seems to give a shit, I'm taking the file down.  If you want a copy, you'll have to harass the one or two people who listened to it.

I agree completely.
