I love it as well, first heard it on the Vasoline single. Utter shame how they never released the entire Unplugged performance- would've made a good EP or supplementary disc on something.

Nice post! LOL
By the way, what does he says in Tumble in the Rough?

It's something like "Cant't ride with my new shoes?

Are you talking about the first verse?

Unless this has been clarified already, it's "Steal your shoes so I can move"
Back for another one

Nah, s/he's talking about the part in the middle, with all the little "Tumble in the rough!"s going on in the background.   :)

I have been holding out because I don't think it makes much difference. However I found this thread extremely amusing ;D so I had to respond. IMO it says "smoke tracks...mud flaps....dust blowin in my eyes" The best sound of the words that I have found so far is the performance from LA HOB in 2000............I don't see how you could possibly hear anything other than that.

After reading this whole thread now, I have to chime in and agree with you 150%.

Scott has been known to change lyrics live and mix with words, but I believe he is saying smoke tracks too. That video clearly shows that is what he sang live in Vegas.

I agree - that's what he sang live in Vegas.  Hands down, and 100%  He always switches up lyrics for the live show (look at the whole "diamond noose" part of "Trippin..." live!) - but on the actual recording, the lyrics are:

Sun cracks / Mud flaps / Dust blowin in my eyes / I'm a roamin...

Dammit.  When Cori, Christie, Scott, Tony, and I get our hands on Weiland in Chi-town, we're holding him hostage until he tells us the right answer.  Which, of course, will be the one I've listed above.   :D

I believe that goes

Can't hold you when I miss you (tumble in the rough)
Left on a summer intermission (tumble in the rough)

Left on a summer intermission (tumble in the rough)

Oooh.  Now THAT just might work.  I always sing:

Can't live, can't buy new shoes...tumble in the rough...left in the summer with new shoes... tumble in the rough.

On Crackerman I think he's saying "Smoked tracks, mud flaps, dust blowing in my eye, I'm a roamin'..."

Think about a car peeling out and taking off.  I think Scott wants you to picture the rear wheels on a car that's getting away from something.  It peels out and burns rubber, hence the "smoked tracks".  That also explains the mud flaps on the car, and the dust blowing in his eye is all that's left after the car has gotten the hell outta there.

I also have several guitar tab books, and I've found several errors with lyrics, so I never trust them.

As far as Tumble in the Rough Goes, I though he said "Can't hold a man by a mission, rough talk sold on the commissions", or something like that.  I've never been successful at convincing anyone though...

I still say I'm right about Crackerman.  lol.  To be honest with you, though, I believe SO deeply that I'm right, that even if Scott himself says it's something different, I wouldn't believe it.    :D

Well, I won't toally argue that one.  I used to sing "Can't hold a man by admission / left on a summer intermission" - until I changed my mind and went with the shoes nonsense.  It's close to yours!!

I'll take that as a half-assed victory.  Cheers! ;D

Am I the only one who regards that line as the best part of the song? The way Scott delivers it is so badass. Whenever I sing along with the song, people react confoundedly since Scott doesn't really sing it conspicuously.

I always thought he was saying "mud flaps, dust BOWL in my eyes. I'm a roamin,
I'm a roamin."

DUST BOWL meaning:  Like the DUST BOWL areas of the mid-west, or as in the DUST BOWL storms that hit the farmers in the early 1900's.

This make me think of a song by No Doubt called "Spiderwebs".  My old girlfriend in college was singing along to the radio one day.  The original lyrics were "No matta matta matta matta who calls---I SCREEN, my PHONE CALLS."

I laughed my ass-off as she sang out-loud, thinking the correct lyrics were, "No matta matta matta matta who calls--- I SCREAM, my BALLLS OFF!"

Ya gotta love it.
