Alright, here we go....Great show last night. Very high energy by the band and the audience was pretty engaged throughout. I'll just cover some of the finer points.
They played Silvergun Supermen, Lounge fly, and Sin. Crackerman seemed to get the largest reaction. Perhaps because it came after a few ballads? The band ran like a well-oiled machine, solid as usual. They played the redemption song after Creep, jammed on something after Sex Type Thing, and even went into to some sort of Jonny Cash cover for a minute (think of Cocaine blues).
They brought out both opening bands (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Wolfmother) for the final bow.
Scott was very animated and active, prowling all over the stage, much more so than I thought he would having read some of the reviews of this tour. Definitely no mic stand leaning all night. He was enagaged with the whole band, but probably came over to Robert the most (who was definitely in high spirits). That being said, 8 outta 10 times when he approached the corner of the stage it was on Dean's side (so maybe keep that in mind if you wanna see Scott up close-go to Dean's side).
Having seen them 6 years ago at San Diego Street Scene, Scott's definitely not as raw and frantic as he used to be......but he has a style and grace to his performance that he didn't have before. It's like he know's how to whip up the audience without having to go completely nuts. Don't get me wrong, he's still very rock 'n roll.....his performances are very dramatic and he's the one that keeps the live performances exciting. In today's modern rock scene, I think there's only one front man that even comes close (Pelle Almquist of the Hives) to being able to do what Scott can do.
On a critical note, it's great to see these guys back again, but they really need a new hit album/single. If they don't, I'm afraid they might end up on the casino circuit sooner then we'd all like. You can only have so many re-union tours and continue to play the larger venues. Sooner or later you have to turn out some new hits to expand your fan base.
I think STP is one great hit/album away from becoming icons, perhaps in the realm of the Stones, Aerosmith, or U2 (all of these bands had huge hit albums later in their careers). Hopefully this tour goes well enough to find them in the studio this winter doing just that.
