what would have been cool if the name was just STP and they never answered the question what does it stand for? create a mystery with the name. then the band could have played into that and offered a bunch of silly names to carry on with the joke. Pearl Jam never confirmed what their band name meant - they always gave different answers ha

I read that STP came from 'Shirley Temple's Pussy'...I read it on Dikipedia (Yes, I know...not exactly the place to find the facts)...but is this true? Is that why some people were posting that they couldn't find the oil logo STP t-shirt....because the name didn't come from the petroleum?
Just asking...can't imagine a t-shirt with an image of Shirley Temple's dodad anyways...

There was a recent reference from Scott Weiland on The Howard Stern Show that the name Stone Temple Pilots was inspired by a carving in an ancient temple that depicts a man in a small flying ship, a reference to ancient aliens.

It was going to be Shirley Temple's Pussy, but then for sales reasons they droped that name. However, they still liked the STP initials. From there, I believe I heard Robert say he suggested one of the three words and the rest was just pieced together.
MM 3/10/09 STP 10/6/09 EC 6/19/10 SP7/16/10

Wiki isn't exactly a hub for reliable information.

The abovementioned story is completely false.

The name came from Weiland recalling an old STP Motor Oil sticker he had on his banana bike.  They wanted to be called Shirley Temple's Pussy, but that name was shot down by their label.  They toyed with Stereo Temple Pirates, but changed it when Robert suggested Stone Temple Pilots - "Stone" being inspired by the Rolling Stones.
How could they not notice it?! Because it's a little mint.  It's a Junior Mint!

Dude.. I just watched that interview yesterday and Scott indeed mentioned something about ancient astronauts and stuff being the influence to the STP name. Now, due to my non-native english I couldn't understand if it was a true story or he was just fooling around.
