STP Autos, Collections, Discs
« on: April 14, 2018, 10:32:02 PM »
I tried to go back to my -now ancient- thread showing my disc collections from 2010, but photobucket is gone, so the images are down, and the thread is so old I'm getting a "Forbidden" message when I try to post to it. So I started this new thread.

Some updates to my autograph wall. It's too bad photobucket went down, because I suppose my old collection presentation is now lost to history, unless I re-up it somewhere. But here's what I did to incorporate the new, signed poster from the STP pre-order.

It's a real shame that STP with Weiland (or even Chester for that matter) never embraced Pledge Music or something like this before...

STP Shows: 12/12/1996 | 10/12/2001 | 05/17/2008 | 05/22/2008 | 03/20/2010 | 08/20/2010
CheSTP Shows: 04/23/2015
JeffTP Shows: 09/26/2019
Velvet Revolver Shows: 05/19/2004 | 11/21/2004 | 04/29/2005 | 08/13/2005 | 05/10/2007 (w. Slash signed Setlist) | 08/28/2007
Scott Weiland Shows: 05/10/2014 | 11/20/2015

Ah, there we go! I got some of this stuff re-up'd.....

Core Era

Notes About The Core Era Set
-The Japanese Import of Core is one of my favorite discs, and at the time it was a gold find due to the versions of Plush and Sex Type Thing bonus tracks.  The acoustic version of Plush on this disc is still a great, studio recorded acoustic track.
-The Core DVD Audio disc is AWESOME. Find this thing and play it on your PS3 with the right calibration and it sounds terrific…. I wish they’d record all of their albums like Core, and then put them on DVD audio.

Purple Era

Notes About The Purple Era Set
-I’ve placed my Unplugged Boot here due to the weird crossover period with Big Empty. This is a great boot with a nice quality copy of the show. I’ve replaced the missing “Sin” with a live version just to carry the feeling of the original setlist. I wish STP would either repair the damaged audio from the original Sin track, or just rerecord it acoustically so we could have heard how it sounded
-The ISL digipak and Vasoline singles were awesome releases at the time. I remember how cool it was to find additional live material on each disc when I bought them from a Tower Records more or less 15 make that 23 years ago now
-The “Boggling” bootleg drives me nuts. It’s not a great boot, but I’m missing the original cover for the disc. I’ll probably never get it either… ugh.

Tiny Music Era

Notes About The Tiny Music Era Set
-The Tiny Music Japanese import was a bit disappointing, as it only had a live version of Meat Plow as the bonus track.
-I’m missing a lot of stuff from this era, although I do have some concerts on video. This is around the era where Silver Disc concert recordings went the way of the dodo, so most of my Tiny Music material is on a hard drive or some random VHS tapes.
-There weren’t any worthwhile single releases from this era as they were all just bland singles with the album tracks. I might start filling in the gaps from this era soon though… as an afterthought.

No. 4 Era

Notes About the No. 4 Era Set
-looking back on it, this might be my favorite era for STP. They had a new album after years of absence. It was a straight up hard rock album, with some amazing tracks, and it was widely well received.
-I’ve got the No. 4 Digipak here on the top left, along with the import in the middle, and then the WMMR interview disc on the right
-The House of Blues boot is my own design. 2-disc set, and I created all of the art for it. I even split the cover art between the two CD’s, so that when they are side by side they line up to make one image, as you can see from the picture above. This was a fantastic STP concert.
-Man I miss how things were from this era. The No. 4 album really did reinvigorate the awful rock ‘n roll scene of the late 90’s.

Shangri-La Di Da Era

Notes About the Shangri-La Era Set
-From a sales perspective, I still contend that one of the biggest mistakes STP’s management ever made was pushing Days of the Week as this albums launch track. This is a very strong album that was highly misrepresented by that track as an identifier for the new release
-I’ve included the Revolution single here as well. I love it when we get additional STP material, and this has become my favorite cover that the band has done.
-I’ve got a few Shangri Era shows on CD as well, although this era’s tour was very disappointing as STP barely played tracks from the album at the time.

Thank You, Greatest Hits Era

Notes About the Thank You Era Set
-STP had only one official Greatest Hits release so far, but there are several albums that have Greatest Hits compilations on them. I’ve included those here
-I remember first hearing AITSTYW and man, was it a great track to lift my spirits during the otherwise negative STP period that this album was released. This was essentially released as a break-up album for the band at the time! All In The Suit was a great, rockin’ surprise, as was the way-too-late 1st STP DVD release that came with the deluxe edition.

Stone Temple Pilots, Revival Era

Notes About the Stone Temple Pilots Era Set
-I’ve got both the Target Exclusive and Best Buy Digipaks here
-We’re already having discussions about the band’s current tour setlist. I hope that STP decides to play smaller venues that draw their actual fan base as opposed to the radio fan base who goes to a concert on an otherwise boring Thursday night or whatnot. If that happens, then maybe we’ll hear some more Shangri or STP album cuts live.

Demos & Outtakes

Notes About the Demos & Outtakes
-Like the No. 4 Era House of Blues discs above, these are both CD’s of my own design. The old black and white photo of a very young Mighty Joe Young felt right for this disc, but the very colorful amalgamation of No. 4 and Shangri-La art really worked for the Outtakes disc.  I hope you guys like the design! I’m glad I got this one printed and ready to go, because I lost these designs a while back when I had some computer problems, but I’m really pleased with them – especially the outtakes disc.

Featuring STP

Notes About my Featuring STP Set
-The Crow. Man, what a great soundtrack this was. And Big Empty was such a strong track!
-The Q101 Live disc has the acoustic ISL track on it. It was a radio exclusive to the Chicago area. Don’t fret however! I’m pretty sure that the same track is featured on about a thousand different radio station discs such as this one from around the same era. Actually, I think most of the disc is the same, but it just has different artwork on it depending on where you lived and what station sponsored it.
-The cut of Wonderful from the FVT disc is probably the best Shangri era live track we’ve got from that otherwise dismal tour.

STP Radio Promos

Notes About the STP Radio Promos
-There are a ton of these things out there. Westwood One radio, Up Close and Personal Shows, etc.
-It’s really hard to identify what’s worth having, and what’s lame. Some of these discs are simply spins of the STP catalogue, while others have cool interviews, or the occasional live track.

Weiland Solo Set

Notes About the Solo Weiland Set
-Another boot of my own design. I called it “Andy Warholism”, which felt appropriate considering the wide breadth of material that Weiland has worked on. It was nice putting this compilation together because it saved my the trouble of lugging all of the different discs around that the guy has performed on. It also includes the 12BB outtakes as well

Featuring Weiland

Notes about this set:
-lots of random discs here. I put most of the relevant tracks on the Andy Warholisms disc that I mentioned above

STP’s Side Projects

Notes About the STP Side Projects Set
-As you can tell, I fully embraced Velvet Revolver.
-The Dual Disc of Contraband sounds terrific – everyone should go find it
-My God, is Libertad a completely under rated, and under sold album! She Builds, and Mary, Mary are amazing!
-The boot in the lower left is actually a silver disc bootleg! Can you believe that I found one in the last ten years?!?
- The disc on the lower right is a great copy of the Chicago Riv show, another disc of my own making, as is the El Ray disc on the top row.
-The paper pack, 2nd row on the right is another creation of mine. I compiled all of the VR bonus stuff into what equates to be a third VR album. It’s only missing the Libertad era stuff (like Psycho Killer, which I’ve got on the She Builds single pictured), but it’s a great mini album.  It’s got: Money | Set Me Free (Hulk Mix) | Negative Creep | Surrender | No More, No More | Come On, Come In on it.  I plan on remaking it at some point to include the Libertad era material as well. It’ll practically be a full album at that point, which is cool.

Some vinyl from my collection......

Stone Temple Pilots Vinyl

Vinyl has made an amazing comeback. Analog sounds great, and modern record players recreate bulletproof sound, especially on nice, more damage resistant 180 gram vinyl. But still, it's nice sometimes to have original pressings as well! ;)   The Reading Fest vinyl (many of us will have the CD's of this) sounds great.

Little story about this one.... So this is actually a 2018 vinyl release that I picked up from a little Geneva, IL record store called Kiss The Sky.  The record captures a concert claimed to be from the Centrum from 08/08/94, although this information disagrees with Rik's concert database. The last track on side 1 is labeled "Gypsy Divey, although the track is actually Weiland's interlude cover of Woodie Guthrie's "Gypsy Davy", and so it appears that this concert is the 08/22/94 show per Rik's database.  And actually, that database just reminded me that this vinyl is a record pressing of the Interstate Love Songs silver disc bootleg as well.  I'd recommend this one to collectors or vinyl audiophiles either way.

First of all, THANK YOU for sharing all of this with us. You truly have an awesome collection here.

I have also been wanting to upload pictures of my collection, but have never understood how. If anyone wants to give some quick directions, I would greatly appreciate it.

As I read, some of the CDs are your own design. Very cool. I ended up doing something similar with my video bootlegs and making artwork for each one after finding a pretty great program. Finding all of the great pictures of Scott and the band online was a really fun journey. As I'm going through these pictures, I see so many CDs I used to own and sold off back in the day. DVDs were always more my thing anyway.

Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for the cool reply...

Now that you mentioned the DVD's and VHS,  I recall having more stuff I could post here, including some verification of my previously infamous claims (for those of you who remember my posts over the years, that is) regarding having a copy of the Chicago show where Dennis Rodman came on stage and sang Sex Type Thing, and also included an STP cover of Ministry's NWO.

I'll try to get some more stuff uploaded shortly...

Wow awesome collection.

How were you able to get a hold of the radio station materials?  That is, if you're at liberty to share those details.....

Eitehr way, very cool stuff.  You should definitely try to track down some of the missing aspects you were talking about.  Not that it isn't already amazing what you've gathered over the years, but go for the "complete set"!!!
Hold me closer.....closer.....let me go!

My STP Concertology:  6/22/01, 10/26/01, 4/21/02, 4/23/02, 5/18/08, 5/26/08, 5/31/08, 8/6/08, 8/8/08, 8/10/08, 7/17/09, 5/18/10, 9/3/10, 9/4/10, 7/25/11, 7/26/11, 9/10/11, 9/1/12, 5/6/18

Here's a bit more.....

Core Era Original CD Longbox
Some of us might remember when CD's came packaged in these...

Art of Anarchy Digipak
This belongs in the grouping above... someday I will have to recompile these pictures.

Stone Temple Pilots Cassette Collection
Most of these are actually still new in the shrinkwrap. I originally bought Core on cassette. I've still got that copy as well, but it's played to death. From Purple forward, I bought CD's, so these are only here to reside in my collection.

STP | Velvet Revolver Concert DVD's
I actually think that somewhere around here I've got one or two more of these. I love that the Chicago STP show was released on disc, because I was at that show.  IIRC, I was able to pick myself out of the crowd on the video at some point - an appearance so unremarkable and unnoticeable that it's just a neat tidbit for me.  I was also at the VR show in Rockford, which is the bottom DVD. The VR show on the right is just a Philly show I picked up somewhere.  I also think I've got an older MTV DVD around here somewhere that had an award show performance of Pretty Penny on it.  I really need to consolidate this stuff and retake these pix.

Stone Temple Pilots VHS
So here's the smoking gun. The two tapes on the bottom are cassettes that I made and printed covers for. The one on the bottom left is the Chicago show which featured Dennis Rodman on stage, and STP's cover of a Ministry song. The one on the bottom right was gold back in the day because it was all of my compiled STP TV appearances and whatnot, although nowadays keeping this is anachronistic because probably everything on that particular cassette is available online somewhere. The Encomium tape was incredibly disappointing. It was touted as featuring STP, but this was during Weiland's first big down time, so basically it's only "Dancing Days" set to a backdrop of Zeppelin images, whereas other bands actually perform on the tape.  The TRL tape has a Sour Girl performance on it.

Core Record Store Day Yellow Vinyl Re-Issue (Lmtd to 3,000 Copies)

Just picked this up actually. It's a basic reissue, but the yellow vinyl is exclusive and between an aggregate population of STP fans, hard rock collectors and record enthusiasts the 3000 copies have been absorbed pretty easily into collections. This will be a tougher one to score over time.

^I have one of these as well.  Definitely hanging on to it.  I actually have an original pressing of Purple that is NOT on purple vinyl, which seems to be a bit more rare as well.

The big hole in my vinyl collection is Libertad on vinyl, which sadly doesn't exist. :(

YYuup. I still need a copy of Contraband on vinyl. I'm always torn nowadays between investing in the first pressings, or just letting the go for them new 180 pressings.

I love my records. Love 'em. But they are a raging PITA to play because of the attention as opposed to letting something like your home media server just pipe through your stereo and never touching it.

Totally hear you on the other.  I'd listen to records more if I didnt have to flip the side every 15m.  Love the sound and the quality, but I get lazy :)

I try to play my records as much as I can. I got myself into a habit of doing this: I put the release date of each of my records in my google calendar. Then usually at night when the wife and kids are asleep, I'll play that certain record, put on my headphones, have a beer or two, I'll either read the liner notes or sit back and chill. It relaxes me, and it also puts me in the mindset of looking forward to listening to the records instead of just pulling it up on my phone or whatever.
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

I have been working on my record collection to do exactly this, but I always end up playing video games instead :)

DOes the cover still have the glaring mistake on it? My original Contrband double LP has two pictures of Duff, and omits poor old Dave completely.

Could you elaborate?  I don't see any errors but I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.  Front of the packaging is the "contraband girl" same as the CD.  The only pic of band members on the whole package is on the back and its the same pic as the back of the CD release (which includes Dave).  On the inside, its all promotional artwork, no pics of any of the band members.
