New album rankings (including Butterfly)
« on: March 25, 2018, 03:26:50 PM »
Now that Stone Temple Pilots (2018) AKA "Butterfly" or the "Butterfly album" is out, I'm wondering how people here rank it amongst the other albums. Just looking at the seven full-length albums, where does it place for you?

Here is my personal ranking:

1. Purple
2. Core
3. Shangri-La Dee Da
4. Tiny Music
5. No. 4
6. Butterfly album
7. Peace album

#6 may seem low, but I actually have a very high opinion of Butterfly. It's just that the first five are so good.

I don't think it's on the level of any of the first five, but I think it's the best thing STP as a band has put out since SLDD.

It would be good to do these rankings again several months from now after the honeymoon phase is over. Let me know your rankings.

2. Tiny Music
3. Peace
4. SLDD
4. Butterfly
5. No. 4

Yep, I think that highly of Peace. I'm tired of Peace not getting the credit it deserves as a great album. Butterfly will likely move up for me as time goes on.

1. Tiny Music
2. Purple
3. SLDD
4. No. 4
5. Core
6. Peace
7. Butterfly

At first Peace got a little too much praise and now it’s getting a little too much heat. It’s a bit of a manic album, but FKOM, Maver, and Between The Lines all still hold up IMO.
When STP had a cookout after filming the video for the Core single "Plush," Weiland made jerk chicken that was "spectacular," Dean raves.

1. Core
2. Purple
3. No. 4
4. Butterfly
5. Tiny Music
6. SLDD
7. Peace

Core is still the magnum opus of the band for me. Purple, a great follow up and close second. No. 4, a brilliant sonic experiment and simultaneous return to form. Then there's the new album. Pretty sure I've already given the songs on Butterfly more attention than I ever did with most of the songs on Tiny Music. I almost put Peace above SLDD, but the few songs I do like on SLDD, I like more than the songs I like on Peace. Peace has a few solid tracks but nothing I can't live without.

I may have put No. 4 in spot 6, but it has Atlanta and I Got You, which steps it up.

The ballads sell me every time and Wonderful, Hello Its Late, and A Song For Sleeping are some of my favorite STP songs ever, which is why SLDD  is my top choice.

The new album just came out, a tad to early for me to add to these lists but...

..shouldnt Talk Show be included? Its basically the same situation as Butterfly aside from what theyre calling themselves hmmmm? :)

I couldn't really say right now, I'd hesitate to rank Butterfly higher than any of the original 5, but what I will say is that I consider it an album that holds its own with their classic era, and unlike the Peace LP, deserves the name Stone Temple Pilots.

If anything "Peace" deserves less credit than it gets.

They released a true turd of an album.
