Looks like many people are liking Pete Murray for STP. Anyone who isn't too keen on this guy?
Personally, I think I liked a few of the singer submissions more than Pete.
I think objectively he is a good rock singer, but I'm not a fan of his vocal style, it sounds too much like generic rock for my liking. Sounds almost like every hardcore Christian rock band or something. I have a hard time imagining his vocals on STP type of music
He is clearly a hugely talented singer, with plenty of experience . I forget the name of the song I heard but his vocal SOARED. That kind of projection is difficult to achieve. Hopefully the more generic rock tendencies would get to be stretched out somewhat by the Deleo's more sophisticated chord progressions.
A friend pointed out though (and is correct from a production point of view) that a lot of his vocals
".. seem to have a little too much magic fairy dust sprinkled on them..." In an acoustic performance I saw,his vocal was so compressed that it almost sounded auto tuned (which it wasn't , but I don't know how else to describe it). Not necessarily something he had any control over of course, but slightly harder to grasp the real tonalities of someone's voice when thats the case.
If you listen to songs from Purple or Tiny Music for instance the vocal is very raw, pretty much diametrically opposite the reverb and delay heavy layering that creates that huge soaring vocal sound that bands like A Perfect Circle perfected decades ago. Hopefully a middle ground can be found. I'm sure it will.
Slightly off point but I worry slightly about the artistic ingenuity of someone that would name their band Ultraspank.
But I'm only teasing.
