Laybe Staley/William Duvall
« on: July 30, 2016, 02:12:11 PM »
I read yesterday that William Duvall has now played more shows with Alice in Chains than Layne did.  I felt the same way about Layne's death that a lot of people on here felt about Scott Weiland's death.  I felt very close to his voice and lyrics and was real shaken up when he died.

I also can't help but think about what a waste Layne was.  Their massive touring basically ended after the Dirt tour.  Layne was so fucked up that they were able to piece a few things together over the years, but nothing worth mentioning.  I don't know a single person that actually saw Layne sing with them.  I haven't looked it up, but it doesn't seem like Duvall has been with them all that long and he's already a bigger part of their touring history than Layne was.

Layne Staley never sang "I Stay Away" live.

Well you know somebody now Coconut. I saw them at Fiddler's Green when i lived in Colorado. It was for the Lollapalooza tour and I actually went backstage and talked with Layne, it was funny , i said Layne let me do " Dam that River and he said " Fuck no", we laughed about it and the cool thing is my old bass player joined Circus of Power and they opened the tour for the " Dirt" album. Mark called me when he and Jerry were drunk one night and said man you should hear this fucking song Jerry wrote, sang some of it over the phone and it was " Rooster". Those were the fucking days right there. They killed it live, so did Soundgarden and Pearl Jam too

Coconut, it was 1993 and i forgot to mention that Tool played the side stage and killed it. Later they were asked to play main stage. Layne was a very reclusive cat, not too out going. Killer singer though

Mark told me that the only song they shyed away from was " Them Bones"
Because it was really tough on Sean to get the drum part tight live. Man, that " Dirt"
Tour changed Mark forever, that fucker was timid as hell until he hit that tour. He is a killer bass player. By the way i feel Sean Kinney and Brad Wilke are fwo very undderated drummers.

Saw Layne in 1993 too, in Rotterdam the Netherlands, one of the first real live shows I ever went to, third one to be exact, very special to me still...great time!

watching the footage of that show now, layne clearly had a bit too much dutch delicacies in his system(not only the obvious ones, cheap but good hard drugs were easy to get in R'dam in the nineties)

I am very jealous of this concert you saw.  I can't imagine many people got to hear "Nutshell" live other than unplugged and they played "Rotten Apple"!!

I saw them, with Layne, twice.  Have seen them twice with William also.  They two Layne shows were opening for Van Halen in 1991 and also opening for KISS in 1996 at Tiger Stadium.  With William it was 2007 opening for Velvet Revolver and then headlining last year with no opener.
Layne Staley never sang "I Stay Away" live.
I knew the questions, but I lost the answers...

I don't know why my response wasn't in the last post....

Saw them twice with Layne - in 1991 opening for Van Halen and 1996 opening for KISS at Tiger Stadium.  Both were awesome for different reasons.  Have seen them twice with William also - 2007 opening for Velvet Revolver and then headlining, with no opener, last year at Hard Rock Live.  They have much better energy as an opener, IMO.  I like William as a replacement singer, even though I didn't want to.
