I wasn't claiming Crackerman was a rip off at all, maybe it is how the song begins, same vibe as 'Dam the River', that give me a feeling that it could be on that album
I never thought you thought that but that one music critic did and it set the tone, yea the song 'Dam that River', it's so subtle but to that critic is spoke volumes and he went off about it. Really, though wasn't AIC like a metal band that tweeked their music to put them in that grunge? Don't you think their first album 'Facelift' was more reflective of the late 80's metal?
It's interesting you mention facelifts sound. For most of the last 25 years or so most of those 90s bands or gunge bands music has sounded like it could have been made in recent years... It didn't sound too dated basically. However, now when I hear man in the box which is played practically everyday on most rock or alternative stations, it's finally starting to sound pretty dated. It's pretty much the only big radio song from that grunge era which is now giving me that outdated vibe though.
I prefer ‘Facelift’ over ‘Dirt’. When I hear Man in the Box, I’m reminded of Rock Band and when I think about that, I think that ruined the nostalgia that should be felt regarding music of that era. It made it lose its value over commercialism so I guess in retrospect the music companies got what they wanted from the 90’s bands after all...commercialism of their music. Then, I think in all the bands at that time, the only band you can really date is Nirvana, even though it’s understood that it never made it out of that era due to Cobain’s passing. You know, like it’s laughable when people parade around all Nirvana which is a clear indication that you don’t really know anything about 90’s music cuz if you did you wouldn’t be parading around in Nirvana. Like those who parade around in Metallica claiming they listen to metal.
I think it was a question asked to Scott at the Grammy Museum show just before his passing. It was along the lines of how some songs can endure years after its initial success & is timeless that it never loses its essence even after 20-30 years of play. ‘Plush’ has that quality vs ‘Creep’. I will never tire hearing ‘Plush’ but for me ‘Creep’ was so overplayed that it is actually one of my least favorite only cuz the radio stations played it like it was their only hit but it is a song that endures to many others. Both songs I don’t find dated but yes, it holds memories of the past if that makes sense.
So yea, you can play a song like ‘Rooster’ off of ‘Dirt’ & it never feels dated.
