2002 Album
« on: January 05, 2016, 10:58:48 PM »
When it comes to STP, I often wonder about the album the band was working on in 2002... I need to correct myself, I've only heard mentions of a 2002 album randomly over the years when reading things here...

It has me wondering though, I heard the guys were wanting to go back to a "Core" feel for the album. Does anyone know much about any of this? Have any of the band members commented on anything relating to that album? I don't even know how far they possibly even got with it...

I was just curious if any of the music they were "possibly" using for that album even made it's way onto other projects any of the guys worked on in the last 14 years, or if it was completely forgotten about.

I think all in the suit was from that time period. Could be wrong tho. I know I spoke to Scott at the end of sept 2002 and he said they wanted to do a tour of smaller venues like clubs after the last tour that they did in 2002. So I'm not sure that they really were actually recording a new album. I don't think the ball ever really got rolling, as I heard the band broke up on the last show of that tour with Dean and Scott getting in a fist fight. Although that has never really been confirmed. And they pretty much toured non-stop since the release of Shang, if my memory serves me correct.

On another thread, I referenced a comment that Scott made about wanting to do a no-frills album with few overdubs. This actually might be the time period that you've indicated above. If so, I do remember something like that. Furthermore, "All In The Suit..." doesn't sound anything like SLDD-stylistically and was originally supposed to be on the Spider-Man soundtrack, but was pulled because it wouldn't be the lead single (if I remember the rumor correctly). Spider-Man was 2002.

The fact that Atlanta dates back to Tiny Music days, among other song ideas, they probably used some ideas for AoA and S/T.

Side-bar....
All In The Suit, was a missed opportunity. Spider-Man was a huge success. That song is badass and could've been a hit for them. While not "Core", it had the "Core" voice, which I think is what casual fans want when they say "we want Core 2.0".

Another similar instance that comes to mind is when they did "Revolution" and released it on its own. About the same time, there was a lousy rendition of that song on the "I Am Sam" soundtrack which spawned a few hits. They should've gotten their version on that soundtrack!

They tried to get "All in the Suit" for the main single for Spider-man but the exec's chose the shitty Nickelback song instead.

Yup! I do remember that. Too bad. And perhaps still would've been smart to include it, especially in hindsight where it went virtually unnoticed on Thank You.

Yeah, all in the suit is a good track to point out when thinking about any 2002 album stuff. That could have been the only or one of only a few pieces the band even messed with before the band went on the super long hiatus.

As far as using STP songs for army of anyone. I remember them talking about Richard Patrick's voice being a lot higher than Scotts and completely different, so they had to write a bunch of new stuff with different tunings that worked with his voice. I guess some of the ideas could have spilled over as well. But I did hear most of it was supposed to be relatively new stuff written specifically for Richard.

And yes all in the suit was a huuuge missed chance for them. It was very inline with the bullshit rock of that time, but it was actually a good song. I feel they didn't put any money or promotion behind it since they had already broke up... I heard it on the radio ONE time...

I can remember frequently hearing All in the Suit on the radio in MI during that time period.

AITSTYW holds specific memories for me... As someone else said, it was during the "bullshit rock" phase and I remember thinking the first time the song came on the radio, "this guy sounds like another grungy Weiland wannabe."

Interesting when I found out later it WAS Weiland...

But, yeah, it gots lots of play on Seattle radio at the time.
