Scott's favorite STP album?
« on: January 05, 2016, 08:54:10 PM »
I just read his book, and I've been trying to figure out what Scott's favorite STP album is? The album where he feels he was the most creative or proud of? I heard him say he had the most fun making Core, and he also said that No.4 was a generic rock album, which I thought was weird. He also said he's proud of the lyrics on a track on Tiny Music.

Any ideas? Did he ever answer this question? Thanks

I heard him say in an interview I was listening to recently that Tiny Music is the album he's most proud of. He thinks it's when the band was at their creative best. Sorry I can't pinpoint the exact interview; I've been obsessively watching a lot of Scott/STP stuff over my holiday break and can't remember exactly which one.

In what is believed to be his actual last interview he talks about it.  Its at about the 2:40 mark.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBUpmegV_SE

I never heard that about No. 4.
There's so much to love on that record.

I do remember at some point Scott said he wanted to work on an album that had very few overdubs and wanted it to be raw. I can't remember at what point in the STP timeline that was.

Yea I just looked it up in his book, he says this about No.4: "What came out was, at least in my mind, a good record of generic rock" (138).

Which confuses me because it's not THAT generic. Also, he said the Blaster album was one of his most fun to record since Core. I'm just trying to figure what he actually thought. I love Tiny Music. Any other tidbits?

Didn't he also say in his book that No 4 had about 5 good songs on it?? Or maybe that was in an interview, I'm sure he said that though. I disagree, the only songs I kind of consider filler on there are 'MC5' and possibly 'Church on Tuesday', they're not bad but I love all the others and I do tend to skip those 2 sometimes.

I would guess at Scott's 5 being - 'Atlanta', 'Down', 'Sour Girl', 'I Got You' and 'No Way Out'.

I dont think Cores his fav, it was just the writing process and the excitement of putting it together that he said he loved.
I remember reading that quote about just a straight up no overdubs type album, maybe he achieved that with Blaster?

Some of No.4 may be generic compared to Tiny and what he did with 12 BB but I'd say its just a straight up rock album

I think it's safe to say 'Tiny Music' was his favourite, he made reference to it in many interviews. I also recall him saying in interviews when 'Libertad' was released that he thought it was the best album he'd made SINCE 'Tiny Music'... He seemed to look at that album as his benchmark.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like he used that "this has been the most fun since the first album" line a couple of times over the years.

He did and he definitely said it about 'Libertad' and 'Blaster' but I don't recall him saying it about 'S/T' (surprise surprise! I'm guessing that was far from 'fun' to make).

I got the same impression. I remember reading a interview myself and he made the same reference back to tiny. He doesn't come right out and say it's his favorite, but it makes it seem like he has a special place for how it turned out.

And imagine if had been a double album. I enjoy Talk Show but Scott would've worked wonders over those tracks.

Obviously Scott was high as fuck when talking about no 4. Yeah its a "generic rock album", cuz they didn't experiment with different instruments or sounds, but the song writing blows away all rock albums of that time and stands with the greats.

Also saying MC5 and church on Tuesday are generic filler songs just because you feel that way about those songs, is just your opinion and holds no weight whatsoever in real life situations. I fucking love those songs, I fucking love that album. Sometimes Scott was a moron who did too many drugs and didn't know what the fuck he was talking about. Remember Bretts interview when Scott said he had no idea why STP fired him? Yeah, I'm sure they told him 5 or 4 times....
