Consequence of Sound Review of Blaster (C-)
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:07:12 AM »
Quote
The Wildabouts are fine. They would pass any test. The bass and drums never slip up, and by all measures, the guitar work is worthwhile and often impressive. Without the hooks or storytelling, the landing sticks, but with some pain in the knees. The intrigue comes from Weiland’s odd turn to glam, not any particular musical moment or bold lyrics. Between the Marilyn Manson-esque “White Lightning” and the dark cover of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” that appears as a bonus track,Blaster holds signs of a different, more interesting album that could’ve been.

Kind of a lame review. I can understand people who aren't fans of Scott or STP having a harder time getting into the music, but what the fuck does "Between the Marilyn Manson-esque “White Lightning” and the dark cover of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” that appears as a bonus track,Blaster holds signs of a different, more interesting album that could’ve been" mean?

All I know.... Time is a valuable thing, watch it fly by as the pendulum swings, watch it count down to the end of the day the clock ticks life away. It's so unreal.

Yeah it's a very weird review.  And I for one don't want more songs like Jean Genie lol

What's interesting is every reviewer seems to have a different set of favorite songs.

I believe only the 'promo/advance' version has the track.

Another UK poster said the track (from Pledge) is listed on their CD, but not actually on it. I'll have mine (from Amazon) when I get home tonight, so I'll confirm if mine also has it printed, but not included.

The advance copy of the album had Jean Genie as the final track, and the tracklisting was totally different - the album opened with Bleed Out (which I think is actually a great fit for an album opener)

as far as i can remember:

Bleed Out
Blue Eyes
Beach Pop
White Lightning
Hotel Rio
Amethyst
Modzilla
Way She Moves
Youthquake
Parachute
20th Century Boy
Circles
Jean Genie

I bought "Jean Genie" as a bonus track from here https://www.hmvdigital.com/releases/4225045

My copy of the CD didn't have it.

Btw this version of Genie is a different/new version than the one already released on the SW compilation..

Have anyone else noticed that the full album including the new version of Jean Genie is available for free in spotify?

Just tried to sign in for that but for some reason it keeps rejecting my name, anyone having that issue?

My CD lists Jean Genie on the back, in the booklet and on the disc, but doesn't have it on the album.

You're right, the reviewer is not going to hear these songs through the same ears as anyone from this board if that person isn't a fan to begin with.  To say that it holds signs of a different more interesting album that could have been is that persons way of communicating that they thought the right ingredients were there for this to be different and special but the final product was just average.

Like maybe there were parts about it this person really liked and thought the band was going to go in a cool new direction but just never did.  Maybe this person reviewing it wanted an art record?

Same as mine then. You'll also notice that Blue Eyes is not listed on the disc although it is, of course, present.

What's all this about? Sounding like a trainwreck.
