I just want to hear the non demo version of that Only Dying

+1

+2 - I'm all for a finished version.
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

Same here, I'm sure Brendan O'Brien worked his magic well on the remake

Since Rob and Dean have stated they have used pieces of 'Only Dying' in other STP songs, I'm not sure if the song will ever be released.  Although I wonder if the re-recorded version had different/new parts added since Rob mentions they had already used the bridge in PoP.  Has anyone ever refuted the claim that 'Big Empty' was called 'Only Dying' but they changed the title once Brandan Lee died?

http://www.belowempty.com/discography.php?do=showsonginfo&type=sia&id=mighty_joe_young-only_dying

This song was re-recorded in 1993 for the soundtrack for 'The Crow'.   When lead actor Brendan Lee died during the production of the movie, the   band decided to contribute another song they had just recorded: Big   Empty. The re-recorded version of Only Dying has never been available.   According to Robert and Dean DeLeo, parts of Only Dying were later used   in other STP songs.

Robert: "And parts of that song were used to connect pieces of other   songs together if you listen....one part was used as a bridge to 'Piece   Of Pie'." (MSN - 10/27/99 - MSN Chat)

I definitely prefer it to the self-titled release, personally. Neither really sound like STP though...

You really dislike the peace album now don't you?  8)

Yup lol

If the demo had just a couple more killer songs then I would take it over Shangri. Other than STP releases I'll take it over Talk Show, solely based upon the terrible vocals on that album

I have to say.. I'm enjoying the funk tracks on MJY, and alot of the STP stuff, has funk influences but not much full blown funk tracks like MJY.

Wow, that's brutal, I wouldn't say it was better than any of those. Is there any particular reasons for this?

Talk Show is actually the only one that I could take or leave vs the MJY demo. I like them about equally I'd say.

Army of Anyone, in my opinion was one of the worst ideas to be made as far as musical supergroups. Richard Patrick or whatever isn't that talented of a singer in my opinion to begin with. Lyrically he's not the best either, this is an even bigger joke than Filter in my eyes. Just don't like anything about it.

SLDD because I absolutely cannot stand to listen to this album. I actually enjoy MJY songs, but I can't get into SLDD whatsoever. It's not a good album to me, I've even tried multiple listens, I don't get anything from it at all.

Self titled, though I do prefer self titled over SLDD, I found this album wasn't bad but it was very lackluster and uninspired to me. Much rather listen to MJY.

So there you have it.

I guess I meant in that he has a good voice, just terribly cheesey lyrics.

+1 The lyrics are what keep me from listening to the Talk Show album more. Three words: Peeling An Orange.

That whole song was ruined...

Anyway.

The MJY demo is cute, and is definitely interesting to hear because it's the very beginning of STP, but in no way does it match up to any of their albums IMO. The demo versions of Wicked Garden, Naked Sunday and Where The River Goes are less realized than the Core versions.

Someone in this thread said this before, but the demo DOES indeed sound like the band is still trying to find their sound. The funk stuff is funny, but I can't really take it seriously.

Only Dying is cool, but I bet if it was on Core, it would've been considered one of the weakest songs on the album, and the monk chanting is just plain cheesy.
Do you like STP? Check out my band! We're heavily STP-influenced. http://dropdeadsixtymusic.bandcamp.com/

Great topic, I also love MJY demo.
I prefer "Where The River Goes" on MJY demo! I think it is really more energetic and much more emotional.
"Core" version sounds dry and too slow, does anyone else find it too?
At first, I was listening to MJY demo for 1-2 months, having not listened to "Core" version yet.
And after demo, I couldn't listen to album version!! It sounds just too slow, don't know why.
By the way, on concerts this song was played pretty faster, probably twice faster than album version.
Also I love more demo version "Naked Sunday"!
I think the album version is overproduced, and the vocals on demo are truly exciting!
The Scott's vocal there is raw, very strong, a bit rough, in my opinion it's great.
Scott's vocals in its best, probably.
