Funny you mention that STP was still a band when Talk Show was up and running...you are correct, but at the time, I remember being really bummed that my favorite band was over. So, like me, other fans probably reacted similarly.

It’s so strange to look back at the timeline now. STP literally played shows in spring of 97 and was back with No. 4 by 1999, but at the time it felt like an eternity.
STP: 07.31.00 | 08.04.01 | 10.24.01 | 04.23.02 | 10.11.02 | 05.31.08 | 09.05.10

Wait, they weren't broken up then?

I sure thought they were, at the time. I remember feeling like "ahhh! oh no! it's over".
But if it indeed was, it was a very brief break.
Can you even call it a break up?

Check out the timeline.
STP last played a show on May 25th 1997.
That fall Talk Show hits the road, having released their album in Sept '97

Then with Scott solo...I reference that MTV clip of Scott talking on set of the Barbarella video where he says "we'll be back to save the world..."

His last solo show in the spring was May 31, 1998 (he was busted the next day in NYC).

Fast forward a bit.
On April 5th of '99 they released "Down" and by August 12, 1999, they played that first show at House of Blues in Vegas.

As we know No. 4 was already done by then, so they had to had reconvened in the studio earlier than that. Wiki says No.4 was recorded in 98-99.
So really...how much time were they "broken up" for?

But back then, in the age of less information, i sure thought they were.

That timeline for 1999 is a little off, Down was leaked late September (the 19th if I recall correctly) and officially released to radio on October 4. I don't know where Wikipedia gets the release date of April 5th from (maybe confused with the release of the Sour Girl single on that day a year later?). The band was still recording the album at that time.

From what I know, the band started pre-production in the form of rehearsing and writing for No.4 after the 1998/1999 holidays in January of 1999 (per then-manager Steve Stewart) and they were waiting to fit Brendan O' Brien's schedule to record the album. He was busy with a RATM album in January and February. STP recorded between March and July (they were basically done recording when Scott overdosed and was hospitalized in the first week of July).

But the band was officially broken up between Tiny Music and No.4 right?

This is before Talk Show but I remember reading that while writing post Purple they didn't know what the future of Scott and STP was and were already thinking post Weiland.  And that most of Talk Show was leftovers from Tiny music and thats why it was put together so quickly.

Thanks for that correction, Rik.

I guess the point I was trying to make was that it was a very short break up, if at all. Although at the time, it seemed permanent.

And yes, Danko, I seem to remember an interview in which one of them (maybe Scott) said that they were “tired” after Purple. Who knows? Maybe that’s what prompted The Magnificent Bastards. And a post-Weiland STP was probably discussed at that point. Heck, I have little doubt that if Talk Show had half the success STP did, they probably would’ve pursued that band full time instead of resorting back.
