When STP had a cookout after filming the video for the Core single "Plush," Weiland made jerk chicken that was "spectacular," Dean raves.

Hmmmm. That's pretty interesting. I hope there's some actual work going down, and some efficiency there, one can dream.

Gets me trying to be hopeful.

Hopeful that it's not a Bowie tribute album.

I can't stand David Bowie.

I don't even know what Scott's up to anymore. One day I hear he's recording a new album, the next day I hear he's taking time off or going on tour. This could be anything in this picture.

You should be burned at the stake for this. Bowie is the reason the 70's and 80's didn't suck absolute shit.

SMITE AWAY.

Real talk!

You're entitled to that opinion.

I don't hate Bowie. He has some great material. I highly doubt that he's the whole reason the 70's & 80's didn't suck. That's a little too bold. However, he is very important to music.

That said, do we need Weiland to become Bowie? FUCK NO!

Hmmm, well I do agree with the statement that "Weiland does Bowie" is awful/somewhat awful/god awful.

When it comes down to trying to "sing" Bowie, Weiland doesn't have a leg to stand on. "Fame", "Ashes to Ashes" and "Jean Genie" were terrible. Made me throw up my morning bowl of BOWIE-Os.

Listen to "Suffragette City (Live Nassau '76)", then try and tell me Bowie didn't make the entire 1970s his bitch.

Real talk.

yes and no. The day (Jim) Morrison died in '71 is when the 70's when to shit... Bowie being the only saving grace.

The 80's were a whirlwind of X and tight nylons, equally as shit... Bowie's Scary Monsters, Let's Dance and Tonight being the only saving grace. I refuse to accept 1987's Never Let Me Down!

Then again, how can someone deny Idol's 1986 Whiplash Smile?

There's an absolute shit ton of fantastic music from any decade in the 20th century you care to look at. The 70s and 80s being no exception at all.

If you think differently, you seriously need to expand your horizons.

Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti.

Awesome examples. On that note though, I think that many people mistake terrible production and sound quality from that era as terrible music. I know that I struggle with a lot of 60's stuff and much, much 70's material for that very reason. It's hard to love a vocal melody when the recording basically often sounds awful.

There was obviously more to the 70s than just Zeppelin. Those just happen to be 4 of the greatest albums of all time, and they were all produced by one band in the 70s. But of course, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall deserve mentions as well. So do Exile on Main Street, Who's Next, Let It Be, London Calling...I can go on.

Though I don't agree with the argument that production style can be a barrier to entry. Personally, I prefer the raw production style of decades past to the over the top, bloated variety of today.

You're not wrong there. I couldn't even begin to list all the 60s/70s/80s albums that matter.

But, for an STP fan, the following are essential 70s listening imo:

Yes - Close To The Edge
Steely Dan - Aja
Joe Walsh - ...But Seriously, Folks
Little Feat - Dixie Chicken

It would be easy to add a few dozen more at least. Since this is an SW thread though, I'll just recommend a couple that clearly influenced him:

Joe Jackson - I'm The Man
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces
