How would you describe the sound of each STP album?
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:34:00 AM »
Each album definetly has it's own sound, but there are so many different genres they meld together. Can you assign each album to a particular genre? I find Tiny Music very hard to place. Some songs like 'And so I know' remind me of some kind of soft rock elevator music because of Dean's guitar and that wood block in the background. Some might define this song as 'cocktail jazz' I guess. But a lot of other songs on the album have that vintage alt-rock feel about them. I'm interested to see what you guys come up with, and not just about Tiny Music.

Tiny Music is a really good album to get mellow to. It's very relaxing. Probably one of my favorites of the five. Seven Caged Tigers is probably my favorite on that album. The ending solo on their by Dean at the time was kind of depressing to me because of the trouble Scott was getting into and the thought that another STP album being released was hopeless and with it being the last track on that album, I figured that was it. Thankfully, there was more to come for the fans.

Core - Hard rock debut
Purple - Grunge at its finest
Tiny Music - Trippy and psychedelic
No.4 - Raw and dirty
SLDD - Roller coaster ride
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

core is a smash mouth in your face sound. real good jamming record
purple is very extensive and complex with deep moments but still rocking
tiny music has a very retro sound to it with quite possibly the best stp song on it...art school girl
No. 4 has a lot of meaning to it. scott had a lot going on and you can hear the pain in both the easy songs and the thrashing songs
shangri la dee da is very sophisticated and i enjoy greatly
....whats next? i cant wait to find out
i am smellin like a rose that somebody gave me on my birthday deathbed

Core -- Grunge/Heavy Rock
Purple -- Psychedelic/Grunge
Tiny Music -- Soft Rock
No. 4 -- Heavy Rock
Shangri-La Dee Da -- Pop/Rock

For the record, I absolutely love Purple and absolutely hate Shangri.

You know, I never classified STP as a grunge band. For me, STP came out right when the grunge scene was popularized. The same goes for pearl jam. Grunge music for me was stuff like old Melvins, ultramegaOK, mudhoney...real noisy stuff with some rock influence that was more about the expression than the music. Pearl Jam's "Ten" was definitely a rock album. Nothing more or less than that. Same with Core. So heres my thoughts on each album

Core: early 90's Hard Rock
Purple: Hard rock with more artistic expression (a band maturing)
Tiny Music: Psychedelic Rock
No. 4: Amazing. (Hard Rock, straight up. My favorite album, way underrated)
Shangrila: An excellent blend of hard rock with art and melody

Thoughts?

I'm actually surprised no one has taken this route.  Cliche at best, but my genuine answer is:
Core:  STP
Purple: STP
Tiny Music: STP
No. 4: STP
Shangri La: STP

That is why I love this band.

every album has a very different sound to it!
they are very eclectic band!
including the voice!
scott has a lot to do with the sound of each album!
the way he sings and puts his voice in the songs affects the whole mood of the albums!
amazing band!

id say there all differnt of course, core a very deep dark vibe that runs through the whole album purple rock with classic kinda ballads interstate etc, tiny music my favorite all tripped out and sounds nothing like anything ive ever heard thats the record where you say this isnt stp but thats how good they are at changing there sound, n4 going back to purple in a way but there most live sounding record than shangri is a mix of everything pop to rock to experimental all awsome albums cant wait for more
