Putting Tracks On Other Albums
« on: May 23, 2018, 04:33:34 PM »
I thought this would be a fun discussion. Where would each track on Butterfly best fit on the previous STP releases? Here is my rundown:

Core: Roll Me Under

Purple: N/A

Tiny Music: Middle of Nowhere, Already Gone

No. 4: Six Eight, Thought She'd Be Mine

Shangri: Just a Little Lie, The Art of Letting Go, Reds and Blues

Peace: Meadow, Good Shoes, Never Enough, Forget Forever

High Rise: Guilty, Finest Hour

Ultimately I think Butterfly is a continuation of the No. 4 and Shangri sound with a little bit of Peace thrown in.

Here's my thoughts of sonic similarity. What makes it hard for me to imagine these recordings on any previous release, though, is that Dean's approach guitar producing, playing and tracking -to me- sounds so different after the 2003-2008 hiatus, that it's instantly recognizable as post-2008.

Mighty Joe Young Demo: Six Eight (intro/chorus)

Tiny Music: Middle of Nowhere

Talk Show: Thought She'd Be Mine, The Art Of Letting Go

No. 4: Six Eight (rest of the song), Reds & Blues

Shangri-LA DEE DA: Just A Little Lie, Finest Hour

Army of Anyone: Roll Me Under, Already Gone

Self-titled (2010): Guilty, Meadow, Never Enough, Good Shoes, Forget Forever

Interestingly, I realize now that I hear no Core or Purple in here at all. Not that I wanted or expected them to re-visit that sound again. When I want to hear that music, I'll pop in those discs.

Great picks.  I had to especially point out this one.  It would not be much of a stretch at all to hear Richard Patrick on that track

Cool topic. Tough thing to do because in a way you have to separate Jeff's voice from the vocals without excluding the melody. Here's what I came up with -

Core: Six Eight
Purple: None
Tiny Music: None
Talk Show: Thought She'd Be Mine, Reds and Blues
No. 4: Art Of Letting Go
Shangri: Middle of Nowhere
AoA: Roll Me Under, Already Gone
Peace: Meadow, Good Shoes,  Forget Forever, Never Enough (would almost put this on Blaster)
High Rise: Guilty, Finest Hour, Just a Little Lie

I guess the main difference is I hear less Tiny Music. For me, not only is it my favorite STP album, but one of the most unique I've ever heard from any artist or band. Truly one of a kind.

There's also definitely something to be said about Rik's comment regarding Dean's approach to laying down his guitar tracks. It's hard for me as well to identify much off Butterfly as reminiscent of anything pre-AOA  and I think a main reason for that is how Dean's style and tonality changed after SLDD.
When STP had a cookout after filming the video for the Core single "Plush," Weiland made jerk chicken that was "spectacular," Dean raves.
