I remember reading an article about how Scott was feeling at the time he wrote the lyrics
for this song.  He was having to travel from the house they were recording at --- to
the city ---- and back again so he could get his smack.  Scott mentioned how tortured
he felt, having to drive to get his drugs, only to run out of them a couple days later.
The whole "caged" vibe has a whole new meaning when you've heard this story.

I think something Dean brought up about this song back in the MTV Rockumentary was how it was more like Scott's Core era stuff in that it was broad and relatable to any situation.

The lyrics are about getting trapped in life, and that's moving and relatable whether drugs are involved or not. So I don't think that knowing why Scott was depressed when he wrote it adds to it because the feeling is perfectly conveyed in the song already and we all can know how he felt when he wrote it just by listening.

In short, I don't think Scott wrote it as a literal description of being trapped by drugs. I think he wrote it as a broad, slightly abstract piece about being trapped by life in general.

Since we're all on the "I read an article...." thing...

I think I read somewhere Scott saying, what he likes is when you can come up with your own meaning to the song, but most of the songs are about drugs, women and media-socio-poiltical aggravation or something like that.

Whenever I get into a conversation about one of their songs I just say "Heroin"

I disagree with that whole heroin thing & you seem to not give him any credit to think or write about anything other then heroin. It could be your thoughts but I have others.

I guess what I meant was, I just say "heroin" and then I laugh, cuz it's ironic. A lot of the  songs are heroin, getting off heroin, back on heroin, heroin is bad, i love you, save me from heroin etc etc etc.

I think that sometimes there are a lot of people who give him(them) a lot of credit for a lot of things, there's no harm in turning it down a notch. Everyone on this site's favorite band is STP...if not, it's gotta be #2 or 3 or they just really like the company. I just don't feel the need to turn every post I make into a love-in. Just being here, being a member etc should make it easy enough for most to understand that I'm already a fan, already support the group etc etc and if I say something like that, just see it for what it is and don't take it personal.

I had always wondered about the meaning of this song too, and now seeing all these quotes, it seems obvious that it's about Scott's drug issues.

I was literally directly in front of Dean for this in Vegas.  The tabs I have seen, and the way I play it, is not even close now that I saw him play it.  I only had the chorus part right, and that was by ear.  This tab is not correct.

Unfortunately, I couldn't study what he was playing.  I can tell you the chorus part, and tab it out here if you like.

He may be playing different chords, but if you play that guitar part along with the song, it works.

I don't know that much about chords, but I do know that there's at least a couple ways to play a G chord, so I'm guessing they're the same chords played on a different part of the fretboard.

That's true, though playing inversions, or 7ths, 13ths, something like that, can make a big difference in authenticity, especially with Dean's soloing.  I wasn't trying to be a dick at all, and the way I played it before sounded pretty good too, but sometimes it's best to play it how the band did.

In fact, Dean made a comment about this towards Velvet Revolver.  Slash and Dave played the verse riff, if I remember correctly, as power chords:

C#5, C5, B5, Bb5, A, for the descending part, and then E, A, E..., E, A, E at the end

When in fact, the real way is:
C#m7       Cm#5     B6sus2    A#m7flat5   A
e-----------------------------------------------------
B---5----------4----------2----------2---------2----
G---4----------5----------1----------1---------2----
D---6----------6----------3----------2---------2----
A---4----------3----------2----------1---------0----
E-----------------------------------------------------

Then:
     E   A6/9/C#  E
e---0------0------0-----
B---0------0------0-----
G---1------2------4-----
D---2------4------6-----
A---2------4------7-----
E---0--------------0-----

If you try the Velvet Revolver way, then try the STP way, you can hear a huge difference, even if the VR way sounds okay.

yeah i would really appreciate it :)

Anyway, here are the two chords in the chorus to Seven Caged Tigers:
Gm#5/A#       A#maj9
e---6-------------5--------
B---4-------------6--------
G---x-------------5--------
D---5-------------0--------
A---x-------------x--------
E---6-------------6--------

Then at the end of the chorus, slide that second chord up one half step to a Bmmaj9.  Oh, and a little trivia, if you move the Gm#5/A# down one fret to a D/A (using the exact same fingering just down one fret), keep the second chord (A#maj9) the same, and then go from F to G, you have the verse chords to Sour Girl!

If you play these chords, you should be able to hear a significant difference from the Eb to Bbmaj7 in that tab.
Interesting, that's not how I played ILS, but I didn't play it the VR way either, thanks.

I wish Dean would release a STP song book on how he plays the songs.

It would definitely be a useful guitar book, unlike most.

the tab from ultimate guitar does sound right... if you can play it, i can't get my fingers to go like that, dunno why, but its a 50/50 chance that i can hit the chorus or not
