As we followed the shows on here with little clips here and there, and knowing his wife would join them on tour occasionally, I wonder if the "good" shows were when she was around. She obviously made the statement that he's the "best he's ever been", so perhaps he was on the straight and narrow when she was around. Those other times, perhaps the loneliness drove him to numb himself? Again, also just assumption.

That's how I'm taking it. I think the constant touring (specifically being forced to, since he was to shell out so much in alimony and child support) was killing him emotionally (and obviously literally).
