STP Cameo In Cobain News Article
« on: August 04, 2009, 04:32:19 PM »
i was browsing around today bored at work and found this article about some controversy with a cobain monument in aberdeen, and STP (just weiland really) is pictured in the side shot on the page as a "grunge band":

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32282920/ns ... lebrities/

pigeonholed once again....
When STP had a cookout after filming the video for the Core single "Plush," Weiland made jerk chicken that was "spectacular," Dean raves.

on topic: STP is not grunge, they should really stop sorting them in with it.

I'm sorry to say, but they will FOREVER be linked to grunge. We know better, but the average joe doesn't. It's just one of those things you have to grin and bear.
Dedicated. Disgusting. Disturbing.

I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round, and the music is too loud..

And the only good songs they have ever written are Plush, Vasoline and Interstate Love Song.

Is it so awful being connected to grunge though?

Not necessarily, some of my favorite bands are grunge bands (nirvana, soundgarden,, alice in chains). But to me what separates STP from those bands, and what makes me love them so much, is the way they evolved after Core and how each of their albums is like its own separate chapter in a book, yet no one seems to recognize that

The problem is they're always listed at last between grunge bands because they're not THAT grunge or grunge enough  ::)

I saw a special on MTV2 a few years ago on the top grunge albums ever, and Purple was #1.

Actually i think what gets people angry about the word grunge is that the media created it and still uses it to categorize every band that sounds even a little like nirvana, pearl jam, AIC, soundgarden and the like. STP certainly had a sound with the first album that was like the other listed bands and so did many other artists who released their first record in the 92/93 period. Just remember, real music fans know these bands have very unique sounds and grunge is just a tag put forth by the crazed 90's media in their effort to categorize. Its like saying deftones are Nu-metal like limp bizkit when you know their not at all. its just louder more abrasive hard rock or metal. Grunge is a cool word but it is just media BS. like Post-Rock what is that shit! totally stupid! I still like the music i just call it early 90's hard rock. But i feel its ok to refer to the early 90's as the grunge era or northwest rock explosion when talking about the hype.  8) rock on people.

grunge or not.. who cares? STP's music is great, thats all, I don't think necesary put a label to everything... grunge, alternative, post grunge... it doesn't matters, music is just that... music.
