Core / Re: STP to play entire Core album live for July 31 webcast
« on: August 01, 2020, 03:17:11 AM »
Loved every minute of this. Doing one of these for each album would be a great time.

Random thoughts:
  • was just nice to hear a non stripped down version of plush for the first time in a while.
  • Eric looked like he was having a blast basically the entire time.
  • Dean’s rig sounded absolutely amazing
  • this definitely didn’t feel “live” by any stretch to me. Like I was more expecting a camera showing them all walk on stage and to start jamming with all of them facing us with maybe a couple different camera angles. This definitely had more production value to it than I expected. Not that it matters, the product was amazing. I just hope we get more.
  • I could also just go for a solid hour of their stories that they were telling between songs. Can we get a PPV of that.
  • Was kind of hoping for some sort of encore like playing only dying, or a cover of something random, but eh I’m impossible to please and I’m still hyped. More please.

The Wicked Garden / Re: Random STP mentions
« on: August 20, 2018, 08:46:22 PM »
I was watching Jeopardy the other day on hulu when a clue with STP as the answer popped up. I looked it up, and it looks like they've been an answer 5 different times on the show. Here are all the clues, dollar amounts, categories, and episode dates.

2017-03-23 -- DECODING THE HITMAKING BAND  $1000: In order: rock, a place of worship, a bunch of aviators

2014-11-1 -- NOT A POP GROUP, YET A POP GROUP  $600: Scone or Rosetta; a Jewish house of worship; Chuck Yeager & the Red Baron

2008-04-23 -- MUSICAL INITIALS $1200: The name of this grunge band with hits like "Interstate Love Song" is sometimes shortened to STP

2004-07-20 -- ROCK & ROLL $1,000 (Daily Double): The name of this '90s group was partly inspired by an STP motor oil logo

2000-03-27 -- PURPLE MUSIC $300: The 1994 album "Purple" by this band includes "Vasoline" & "Interstate Love Song"

Edit- Found one VR one too

2008-01-08 -- FIREARMS IN SHOW BIZ $1600: Slash must love the NRA; he went from Guns N' Roses to join STP's Scott Weiland in forming this supergroup

Dean DeLeo / Re: Joe Perry's Relationship With Dean DeLeo
« on: July 31, 2018, 12:59:03 PM »
It always seemed to me like Joe's main "relationship" was with Robert, so I doubt a whole lot changes. I'm sure they'll all still group up occasionally for the random charity event / one-off shows, assuming his kid and Dean aren't in the same place at the same time.

Dean DeLeo / Re: Are We Allowed to Talk About Dean Deleo Yet?
« on: July 20, 2018, 10:36:10 PM »
Just would like to cosign a lot of the reasonable thoughts in this thread, and to say that I hope the band addresses it rather than just continue forward with radio silence. But I've been meaning to add that Joe Perry's kid throwing in the #STPSUCKSANYWAY! hashtag irked me. If you are trying to send a serious message about a serious issue, throwing a childish opinion about the band's music itself doesn't really add much substance.

Third time the charm? @ Download Festival in Donnington

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2Dt9UGOX9U

Crowd was really into it from the get-go. Axl has gotten better with most the song outside the chorus. The crowd seemed happy to help him out with that part. Talking about the chorus, I'm not expecting it to sound exactly like Scott, that's not the point of a cover. But it doesn't really sound like what I'd imagined an Axl cover to sound like. Still, making progress. Wonder how long it will stay in the setlist rotation?

Axl was pretty terrible, but it was the first go and obviously its the willingness to play any VR that is big.

Something I read on the GNR forums I agree with: Frank on the drums didn't really nail some parts of the song like I'd wished. A lot of the energy of that song builds from those pounding drums going back and forth with Duff's  intro. Slash and Duff obviously aced their parts throughout it all, I bet it was a weird ass deja-vu experience for those two given the circumstances.

I hope they consider improving it and giving it a few more whirls. I think the odds of hearing anything else VR wise like FTP is pretty much zero, so this could be all we get.

I actually have been pretty satisfied with the KoC performances I've seen so far. The earlier one with Corey Taylor was great, getting to see Robert play Slither. I hope Dean's inclusion means they'll play interstate in a non-acoustic format.

Between Hollywood Vamps and KoC, it seems like Sorum and Robert have gotten pretty comfortable playing together. I'm sure the common bond of playing with Scott made it a pretty natural friendship.

The Wicked Garden / Re: STT problem

Don't forget Ozzy's "No More Tears". That style of descending riff has existed for a while, I just feel like the Deleos put their own unique twist on it and the speed specifically set it apart.

Per the STP Facebook:

Back in 2015 , Robert, Eric and myself spent and afternoon with Steven Tyler reworking and recording Janie's Got A Gun. The song is on Steven's latest record titled " We're All Somebody From Somewhere. "
What a beautiful day we all had in the studio. Steven is electric. No one better !!! For real !!! Hope ya dig the track.

Just previewed it on my phone via the itunes store. Pretty cool twist on a classic.

Wonder if the Beavis&Butthead will have the music vids? They were pretty essential to the show. I vaguely remember them poking fun at Scott and plush at one point.

Overall definitely good news.

Kind of random. But I'm sure lots of us here are pretty hooked on watching live performance vids/bootlegs. Its usually pretty easy to tell whether "good" scott or "eh" scott showed up. But what things do you notice immediately if he was off his game?

(Before I start, I loved every show I've seen, and almost every one I've watched online. Still, some undoubtedly are better than others)

For me:

1. The attempt at jumping an octave to sing "YOU WANNA KNOW ABOUT ATROCITY" in Sex Type Thing. In most his younger shows he nails it with no issue. Other shows you can tell he hits it flat and it sticks out. Some shows he skips it altogether and stays with the low octave (typically sounds like he's out of breath when he does).

2. Big Bang Baby: The entire song really, but especially  "Where the birds can't sing along" and "Sell your soul and sign an autograph". In the first 1/3 to 2/3 of his career, he typically nailed this. Later it seemed like more voice cracks snuck in. Unfortunately this song sounds a lot weirder (IMO) on the lower octave so he couldn't call that "audible" like in STT as often.

3. Silvergun Superman: "I can hear when the pig whispers sweetly". This isn't an insanely difficult pitch for scott, but rather its more about whether he hits the first note flat or not. Since the notes change in that line quite a bit, if he starts off flat, it tended to stay flat until the line ends. Plus, the words before this (Tell me how to frame your name) are much lower, so he really has to "stick the landing" so to speak when starting that next line. Are there any things that you guys tend to look for or subconsciously notice when listening to Scott's shows?

Scott Weiland / Re: Six months later
« on: June 03, 2016, 08:29:11 PM »
Damn...6 months already? I'm sure I'm speaking for a lot of people when saying that I found myself exploring musically and listening to some different genres before Scott's death, but for the last six months I've been listening to nothing but nostalgic 90's tunes. Its so weird knowing Kurt/Layne/Scott are all gone, yet their lyrics from decades ago still feel so relevant. Scott's death to me pretty much triggered an immediate mix of a mid-life crisis with an existential crisis. How is he suddenly gone? Did part of my childhood just die? 6 months later, I've dealt with those. But I'm still stuck in this state of perpetual nostalgia, and now I'm just exploring some lesser known 90's music rather than exploring current genres like I was before.

Rolling Stone asked Joe Perry how Rob became the go-to once duff couldn't do it

Quote
How did you get Robert DeLeo to replace Duff?
Perry: About a week before we found out that Duff was going with GN'R, I got a text from Robert. I've known him since right after their first record came out. He came up to [my studio,] the Boneyard, and Steven and I and him spent a weekend and wrote some songs together. I don't think anything ended up on a record, but we got to know each other. And he's a really amazing musician. So when I brought his name up as a potential to fill in Duff's spot, everybody was "Yea." He's really, I'd say, underestimated. I think he's going to knock everybody out. We're going to miss Duff, but I think him and Matt will get along great musically. I think it will be a really good matchup.

Speaking of the doors gig,

A cool pic&tweet from the other night with the doors.

I'd honestly consider getting that  framed if I'm him. tweet and all, its definitely as cool as any autograph IMO. Either way I hope he stays on this picture kick he's been on lately, especially when its him with big name rockstars. He was with Peter Frampton the other day. Keep taking these opportunities to collaborate with other household names when possible. Its not new music, no,  but I love seeing every second of him getting his name out there like he is right now. He's a hell of a musician and he's earned this.

I'm kind of cool with the idea of playing the new-singer hunt slower than quicker anyway. No need to rush. And if while waiting for someone worthy, an A-list celebrity and two household-name rockers want to get some gigs in with you, eh, just tape it for us.

He's filling in for Duff, who had to bail for the GNR reunion. Sorum is also joining (HV, not GNR). De javu :o

So
  • Rob already does DD with Collin from Def Leppard
  • He just got done doing a huge show with The Doors
  • Now he's touring with Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry

Our boy Rob starting to keep some pretty solid company.

Also will be interesting to see Rob tour with Sorum. Wonder how they have meshed lately over this charity gig and weiland situation.
