One thing,though...his vocal strength has diminshed through the years due to the drugs, age, and the chain smoking.Listen to the performance of Wicked Garden from 1993 on letterman...dude could project . He doesn't have the same power anymore. Honestly, I think he sounds better on the slower songs than he does on the heavier songs these days (SLDD bears that out), which is another reason why VR just didn't cut it for me.

There was such a huge, drastic change from Purple to Tiny Music, although you can hear a little bit of things to come on the songs that were recorded later on Purple (Still Remains is a good example, with the "If you should die before me" part sounding very much like  TM).  His voice was in better shape for the most part on No.4. I love SLDD, but honestly he sounded nothing like the old Weiland at all. The vibrato was completely gone, and his voice had morphed into more a of a high-pitch whine. That said, his vocals on "Wonderful" and "Hello It's Late" for example had a tenderness that to my ears was endearing. Then to hear that screechy bullsh*t with VR...nope. That was the wrong kind of rock for him to be singing, IMHO, apart from a few gems like "Slither" and "Fall to Pieces". He was better than that crap (don't even get me started on the track that ripped off "Unglued").

It'll be interesting to see what the new STP disc will sound like. Listening to AoA (which I liked, regardless of how others felt) and a good deal of SLDD leads me to believe that the DeLeos are moving to a softer sound, but Weiland's detour with the GNR leftovers were a different matter entirely. God, I'm excited to see (or rather, hear ) what's on the way.

Sorry that was so long winded. Just been watching the Thank You DVD, and am just hyped.

Fantastic post.  Hit the nail on the head.  If you listen to the recordings of the current tour of songs like Crackerman or Wicked Garden and compare those to the recordings of those same songs in 92-94, there is a huge difference.  In 2000-2002, scott still was able to muster up the bravado vocally on some songs, in particular Wicked Garden.  If you listen to the Wicked Garden recording from the Family Values Tour of 2001, it stills sounds pretty on-par with the 92-94 performances.  However, compare that to how he sings now, there is a "thin-ness" about his voice.  His voice was very full back during Core-Purple (just listen to MTV unplugged), and for some reason, on TM, it sounded like his voice had been ravaged, and he sounded very raspy on TM.  His range was higher, but that fullness was gone on those vocals.  For No. 4, that raspy-ness was gone, however, his range continued to be higher.  On No. 4, he regained some bravado and depth to his voice on songs like "Down"-the chorus, "Pruno"-on the "I got the message but I lost the race" and some other parts.  SLDD followed with this vocal style.

It will be interesting to hear how he sounds if they release a new album, I feel like his VR years stripped his voice b/c he was screaming all of the time, and they performed a lot of shows in that period.

The Wicked Garden / Re: STP cover songs
« on: July 02, 2008, 02:18:36 PM »
A few others they have played in concert (a few only partial):

1.  Jumpin Jack Flash
2.  Gypsy Davy- Was this "midnight roundup" during the purple tour?
And obviously:
3.  Ticket to Ride
4.  Day Tripper

Time of the Season was done in early 1999.  Scott did the vocals for the band Big Blue Missile, I believe.

I also remember Scott doing the Doors' "five to one" and "LA Woman," anybody else confirm this?

Those pictures that the VH1 special showed of Scott at various times during the episode, in what looked like partying mode, were taken after the Jimmy Kimmel Live show on May 1st.  I don't know if any of you had seen those pictures, I hadn't.

I wish Scott had kepts that look sans mustache for the tour- reminds me of the Tiny Music days

This review I came across in the Dallas Morning News was less than favorable.  Makes some interesting points in the review including how they slowed the tempo down of a few songs...

Played Shows 1992-2012 / Another great review rolls in.....

Nice, in-depth review.  First review that comments on the "new" big bang baby, and pretty much echoes what most of us have been saying.  Also says that Weiland and his wife had an "airtight" embrace following the show, possibly an indication that things may be looking up in that department?

Scott Weiland / Scott's Hair Color
« on: June 18, 2008, 06:38:48 PM »
What is scott's natural hair color?  Ever since 99, when he hasnt dyed his hair, it's been dark, dark, dark brown to blackish.  But i don't think this is his natural hair color, I think he dyes it this color, because he had dirty blond hair in the early 90's and the tiny music recording era, and that looked pretty natural.  Never did he ever have hair this dark until like 99.  It was a brown at its darkest before.  But it seems as though the black is darker than his natural hair color.  Maybe his natural hair color is a dark brown, but I think that he has dyed his hair a darker black for the last 8 or so years.  Anybody know?

Stone Temple Pilots News / Re: STP Plan New Album After Tour
« on: June 12, 2008, 03:07:38 PM »
My prediction is that they will be recording some of their concerts this summer and will release a live album early next year with maybe 1 or 2 new tracks, or previously unreleased tracks.  The prospects of them recording a whole album of new material is shaky at best right now, but I do believe that they will release something.

Scott Weiland / Weiland with a beard
« on: June 09, 2008, 07:09:20 PM »
I think his best look is with a beard, it fills out his gaunt face and doesnt make him look so skin and bones.  He usually grows one when he's not on the road, but his last tour w/ VR he had one for half the tour and I thought, along w/ his long hair, sported one of his best looks- what do yall think?

Purple: Unglued or Pretty Penny (I think they did get some radio airplay as a b-side)

Tiny Music: Tumble in the Rough (Again, I think this got some play as a b-side)

No. 4: Glide (I think this is their most underrated song, and with it's catchy bridge, would have been a better choice than No Way Out)

Shangri La: Coma, and Too Cool Queenie would have been more radio friendly than Hollywood Bitch IMO

IMO

Hollywood Bitch, No Way Out

Coma should have replaced Hollywood Bitch, and Glide should have replaced No Way Out

The Wicked Garden / 1995, the lost year
« on: May 22, 2008, 09:01:29 PM »
In February of 1995, STP did 2 weeks in the studio, all of which was eventually scrapped after, from what I can guess, Scott was MIA. I wonder what, if anything, from these sessions, was picked up the following Fall and used for Tiny Music. I feel like 1995 is a hazy year in everyone's mind since STP did practically nothing until Tiny Music, but does anyone know anything interesting from this year or from the scrapped sessions?

Also, looking at the what Scott did with the Magnificent Bastards, it would be totally logical to think that Tiny Music(lyrically) came from the transformation that Scott went through during 95'- as he started to where more classical clothing and go towards a more '60's sound.

Anyone have any thoughts on this lost year?

On Tour / Setlist Breakdown For The Rest Of The Tour
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:40:07 AM »
Ok, so they played 17 songs during their first show.  After "Lady Picture Show," Scott said that they would be changing the setlist every night and reaching deep into their reportoire.  Dean also mentioned in an interview that they were practicing roughly 35 songs, so I broke down the songs that they have a history of playing from each album, and songs they have rarely played to give us an idea of what the 18-20 songs that they didn't play in the Ohio show might be:

Core
6 songs played, 6 left (4 left w/o Wet My Bed and No Memory Instrumentals)
Songs not played but will probably be played:
1)   Piece of Pie
2)   Sin
Songs that do not have a history of much play:
1)   Naked Sunday
2)   Where the River Goes

Purple
4 songs played, 7 left
Songs not played but will probably be played:
1)   Unglued
2)   Pretty Penny
3)   Meatplow
Songs that do not have a history of much play:
1)   Still Remains
2)   Silvergun Superman
3)   Army Ants
4)   Kitchenware and Candybars

Tiny Music
3 songs played, 9 left (7 left w/o instrumentals)
Songs not played but will probably be played:
1)   Tumble in the Rough
2)   Seven Caged Tiger
Songs that do not have a history of much play:
1)   Art School Girlfriend
2)   Adhesive Love
3)   Ride the Cliche
4)   Pop Love Suicide
5)   And So I know

No. 4
2 songs played, 9 left
Songs not played but will probably be played:
1)   No Way Out
2)   Sex and Violence
3)   Atlanta
Songs that do not have a history of much play:
1)   Heaven and Hotrods
2)   Pruno
3)   Church on Tuesday
4)   Glide
5)   I Got You
6)   MC5

Shangri La
1 song played, 12 left
Songs not played but will probably be played:
1)   Days of the Week
2)   Hollywood Bitch
3)   Wonderful
4)   Tool Cool Queenie
5)   Long Way Home
Songs that do not have a history of much play:
1)   Dumb Love
2)   Black Again
3)   Hello It’s Late
4)   Regeneration
5)   Bi-Polar Bear
6)   Transmissions from a Lonely Room
7)   A Song for Sleeping

So I calculated 15 additional songs that they have played before with some regularity in addition to the ones they played in Ohio.  I hope they reach DEEP in their repertiore and pull out the songs they rarely, if ever, have played.  And I would assume if they do that, it will be in the amphitheater shows where they are featured as opposed to a festival in which they are playing to casual fans
